Plot
Tiger on the Beat is a 1988 Hong Kong action comedy film directed by Ric Waai. The movie serves as a buddy cop film, following the story of seasoned Detective Yip Pong-Fei, played by Richard Ng, and his rookie partner, Detective Lee Yin, portrayed by Michael Tiu. The plot begins with a significant heroin trafficker being mysteriously murdered, leading the duo to delve into the world of crime to uncover the truth behind his demise. Upon their arrival at the crime scene, Yip and Lee become acquainted with Inspector Lee, played by Kelvin Wong, who is overseeing the investigation. Initially, Yip struggles to establish a working relationship with Lee due to Lee's innocence and inexperience in the field. Lee is portrayed as being very idealistic and determined to prove himself. This leads to Yip initially treating Lee as an apprentice, while also frequently belittling his skills. However, as they continue with their investigation, Yip comes across a young woman named Ling (played by Rosamund Chan) whose brother was killed in an accidental shooting by Yip's own team, which he witnessed. The two start to form a bond as they navigate the complex and dark world of crime in Hong Kong's streets. Their initial reluctance to work together gradually turns into an understanding that allows them to become more effective partners. Throughout the film, their interactions become more endearing as their working relationship blossoms. As they further examine the murder, Yip and Lee gather clues and piece together a complex web of corruption within the police force and the world of heroin trafficking. During the investigation, they become entangled in a web of deceit, confronting the possibility of police corruption, as several key figures within the department seem to be involved in the heroin trade. In this intricate plot filled with corruption, crime, and personal struggle, the seasoned cop Yip begins to realize the importance of having a trustworthy partner. At the same time, they navigate their personal struggles, each grappling with their own demons in a world ravaged by corruption and crime. The seasoned cop, Yip, comes to terms with past mistakes in his career. This self-awareness is shown throughout the film as he navigates a complex web of corruption, attempting to make sense of past experiences. Meanwhile, Yip and Lee eventually uncover the identity of the primary suspect behind the heroin trafficker's murder – an unexpected twist that adds a layer of complexity to the plot. Throughout the investigation, numerous characters become caught up in their pursuit of justice, each contributing to the intricate world that unfolds.
