Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick

Plot

'Sky is Grey, Danger is Real' Thirty years have passed since the world witnessed the aerial feats of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the United States Navy's top gun. His unorthodox flying skills, paired with a rebellious attitude, earned him both admiration and disdain from his peers. The years have witnessed numerous changes in the world of aviation, and with it, Maverick has been stuck in the limbo of his naval career, avoiding promotions that could ground his passion for flight. However, the world of fighter jets and bravery demands no indulgence, especially when the stakes are high. The arrival of a communiqué from Vice Admiral Cyclone, Maverick's old ally, sets him on a perilous path once more. This time, the mission is not for self-glorification or earning recognition, but for the country and its soldiers who will one day be faced with a daunting challenge. The plan to destroy a deep underground facility within a remote region, capable of producing nuclear materials, hangs precariously, caught in the delicate balance between its potential to save thousands and the unacceptable threat it poses to the world. The idea goes against conventional wisdom and military doctrine; send, only the most capable pilots, in sleek F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, piloted by the best of the best - the elite TOP GUN graduates. Among these elite, six men, chosen for their distinction, would undergo one of the most extreme training programs in human history - flying at Mach 7, sustained altitudes of over 40,000 feet, in adverse conditions. These super pilots, armed with state-of-the-art sensors, AI, and cutting-edge technology, possess skills honed in the true spirit of airborne warfare. Captain 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's dead friend, is brought into this group for reasons of both heritage and raw potential. The air around him crackles with the air of challenge, and Rooster leans into this spirit with determination. His skills finally being recognized and backed by Maverick himself, this young warrior presents a real threat to the experienced command structure of the seasoned elite within the program. Lieutenant Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, Lieutenant Bradley, Lieutenant Jake Sully, Lieutenant Lieutenant Benjamin J. Warner (also known as "Cyclone"), Lieutenant Lieutenant Natasha "Phoenix" Trace, and Lieutenant Junior Grade Robert 'B pending') Officer Robert take their seats in the 'Fighter Pilot Program', joined, under sheer force of will and for the honor of belonging in the pantheon, as instructors under the lead of their unconventional leader, Maverick. From their advanced mission briefing by Admiral Coup, vice Admiral 'Bob' Floyd, and other veterans, these students must bear the knowledge of their duty along with a grim reflection on why they, particularly Rooster might be put through not only this form of aerial test, but through the intense process of confronting demons in flight – making an internal clash, of life and death stakes. Rooster and the likes struggle along the training process, leaving to question how much of their aviator's instinct and military knowledge they're able to apply when confronted with such intense scenarios at supersonic levels. Those minutes count when it comes to establishing such a complex challenge whose objective might look so seemingly achievable but possess no immediate physical representation prior. Maverick who returns from the edge now keeps what makes him successful, the way he handled his crew here also begins the testing of their self-awareness at extreme highs before training goes. As we see pilots in the making being shaped to the call, with a resolute background story the end provides as it marks the moment realisation and gratitude flows within so many faces. Beneath the constant howl of fighter aircraft and adrenaline rush, this finely crafted army of perfection has been undergoing subtle yet crucial development. The high-pressure training instilled in each team allows for minute explorations in flight and in their moral fortitude. From each crack of a bullet, to the sonic boom breaking off in space, no mission ever occurred as calmly as the one which would consume seven distinguished, uniquely special types of men. The unwavering sense of allegiance towards one another comes to define what their training goals signify at the end. Traversing sky so empty and barren, there is but one constant to this eternal performance -the pure and most honest thrill enjoyed in playing hard the role chosen for our warrior protagonists: our country's ultimate protection in air.

In a classic, crowd-pleasing, and yet incredibly rousing and accessible way, this film completes a character's growth and settling over 35 years. Whether it's the youthful spirit of the past or the ambition of the present, whether it's the reconciliation and inheritance between father and son, or those clichéd love stories... you might pick out the flaws in this movie, but you can't deny that it makes you hold your breath while watching. The classic Hollywood vibe that permeates the entire film, along with its sentimental but never excessive approach, definitely makes it one of the best American patriotic films in recent years.

Just saw the Cannes premiere! Cannes really rolled out the red carpet for Tom Cruise, with the Red Arrows doing a fly-by with blue, white, and red smoke trails before the screening, on top of the red carpet treatment. An American "warrior" film ("warrior" in a positive, strong sense) becoming the hottest ticket in the non-competition section … I'm not even sure what to say.

Sounds like "Wolf Warrior" meets "Top Gun" in the sky!

Standard Hollywood three-act structure, standard U.S. military recruitment advertisement, standard assembly-line product crafted by the developed film industry, yet somehow it's still the best theatrical release of 2022 :)

Used 2022 technology to create a movie that feels like it belongs in the 90s.
