Tourist Family

Plot

The movie Tourist Family revolves around the Bens, a Sri Lankan family consisting of husband Rohan (played by a talented actor), his partner Asha, and their two children, Lena and Lakmal. After facing difficulties and a sense of disillusionment in their previous home in Sri Lanka, they make the decision to bid farewell to their comfortable life and relocate to the city of Mysore in India in search of a fresh start. The family faces numerous difficulties as soon as they arrive in their new home, an old house in a historic Indian neighborhood. The Bens struggle to adjust to the local culture and the complex, unwieldy bureaucracy of the Indian education system. They also encounter numerous challenges in bonding with their new neighbors, who seem rather cold and disinterested in the family's warmth and kindness. Ashok, the family's uncle, is initially portrayed as a bit of an outcast among the Bens. The uncle's old-fashioned and conservative nature often puts him at odds with Rohan's optimistic and open-minded perspective. However, deep down, both men come to appreciate each other as Rohan embarks on a journey to get Ashok and the family to melt into the tight-knit community of the neighborhood, often breaking through the walls of tradition. Lena's relationships with her mother and father add another layer of complication to the transition, as the 11-year-old grapples to cope with her roots and the role she takes within the family's traditional culture. She learns that the Sri Lankan culture she left behind holds a significance in her life. As she discovers new friends and starts at a school in the city, she must carve her own path through the difficulties of friendship and identity. Meanwhile, Rohan sees potential in his disheveled neighborhood, particularly the building next door, a neglected and downtrodden shop that people had long regarded as a neighborhood eyesore. Rohan purchases the property with the aim of bringing people together and giving the community a sense of belonging by creating a charming new hangout spot called Cafe Myra. This initiative gradually brings people from different walks of life together and ignites a spirit of camaraderie and friendship that transcends cultural differences. As the community discovers and explores Cafe Myra, magic really happens. Residents begin to recognize one other; the once-skilled artisans in the neighborhood rediscover their skills, and others do the same. People grow to value their neighbors, whom they have hitherto seen as outsiders. Asha, initially worried, unexpectedly finds solace in the new social circle developing before her and is convinced that her partner's initiative is indeed taking their lives in the right direction. The family even manages to bring a lively cultural essence to the area. They continue to enrich it by promoting local knowledge and honoring their heritage while happily adapting to Indian lifestyle. Each family member gains priceless understandings of what it means to connect and learn with those who genuinely care. As time progresses and relationships deepen, their little café evolves into the life force and heart of the community. While the transformative journey is not without its emotional setbacks, the Bens find solace in their newfound family of fellow community members. The film captures the pivotal moment when the relationship begins to transform from 'outsiders' to the neighborhood "poster children." At the heart of the narrative, we find Rohan, whose dream has come true. As Cafe Myra's influence and social reach, he develops pride in his sense of home.
