Twins

Plot

Twins is a 1988 comedy film directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Thomas Meehan and Barry Morrow. The movie takes place in the 1950s and revolves around two identical twin brothers, Julius and Vincent Benedict, born from an experiment to create the perfect child. The story begins with the brilliant but unorthodox geneticist, Nathan Eisenberg, who is determined to create a child that embodies the perfect qualities of both parents. Nathan's experiment involves in vitro fertilization and cross-breeding. He uses the sperm of the world's greatest athletes and combines it with the eggs of the world's most intelligent and beautiful women. After numerous failed attempts, Nathan finally succeeds in conceiving identical twins, Julius and Vincent. Julius, the planned child, grows up to be an athletic giant with a kind heart. He is raised on a remote South Pacific island by philosopher and anthropologist, Professor Eisenberg, who serves as a surrogate father. Professor Eisenberg teaches Julius the ways of nature, philosophy, and compassion, shaping him into a kind-hearted individual who understands the importance of human connections. On the other hand, Vincent, the unplanned accident, is left at an orphanage. Without the nurturing love and guidance he needed, Vincent grows up to be a small, tough, and street-smart individual. He develops a rough exterior to protect himself from the cruel world and becomes an expert in getting in and out of trouble. As the years pass, Vincent becomes a low-life with a reputation for being quick-witted and resourceful. He earns a living by taking part in petty crimes and scamming people. However, his life is about to take a drastic turn for the worse when he is threatened by the loan sharks who have been after him for a substantial debt. In a bid to save his own life, Vincent discovers that he shares a unique physical characteristic – identical twin birthmarks – with an individual he sees in a magazine advertisement. Intrigued, Vincent decides to seek out this individual, not knowing that it may lead him to his long-lost twin brother, Julius. Meanwhile, Julius, living a carefree life on the island, is unaware of his twin brother's existence. However, when he returns from an expedition, he meets a mysterious woman who introduces him to the world of human relationships and makes him realize the importance of emotional connections. The movie shifts its focus as Vincent arrives on the island in search of Julius. Initially, the two individuals struggle to connect due to their vastly different upbringings and personalities. Julius, naive and sheltered, struggles to comprehend the complexities of Vincent's street-smart nature, while Vincent, hardened and cynical, finds it difficult to accept Julius' innocence and naivety. However, as the twin brothers embark on a series of misadventures together, they begin to appreciate the unique qualities and characteristics that make each of them special. Vincent learns to let go of his tough exterior and connect with people on an emotional level, while Julius learns to become more assertive and self-reliant. When Vincent's troubles catch up with him, Julius steps in to help his twin brother in return for Vincent's help in finding a cure for a rare genetic disorder that runs in their family. Along the way, they embark on a road trip, taking in the beauty of the American landscape and learning valuable life lessons about family, friendship, and human connection. As the story unfolds, Julius and Vincent form an unbreakable bond, realizing that despite their differences, they share a deep connection that transcends biological ties. Their journey ends on a heartwarming note, as the twin brothers embark on a new chapter in their lives, armed with a newfound appreciation for each other and the world around them. Twins, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, was a critical and commercial success, cementing the comedic duo's place in the hearts of audiences worldwide. The movie's clever script, memorable performances, and lighthearted tone made it a box office hit, grossing over $216 million worldwide.
