Plot

In the late 1800s American West, the landscape is scarred not just by the tumbleweeds and dusty plains but also by the countless violent acts that have become an integral part of life. William Munny, a man who has walked this harsh path before, has long since put his bloody past behind him. He's now a widower, running a small farm where he raises hogs, living a peaceful life amidst the haunting memories of his past exploits. However, financial struggles have befallen Munny, as supporting his two young children on his meager farm income leaves him short on resources. He's forced to weigh the responsibility of providing for his children against his deeply ingrained reluctance to dip into the treacherous world of bounty hunting, a life that nearly consumed him. Eventually, this internal conflict subsides, and he finds a way to deal with his desperation – by accepting one final job from local schoolteacher-turned-bounty-hunter, Schofield Kid, providing Munny a chance to rid his conscience of one final score. The town of Big Whisky, on the other side of the border with Canada, is ripe for trouble. It has recently seen a significant influx of gunslingers and bounty hunters seeking to capitalize on the generosity of the town's prosperous saloons. Among these gunmen are two of the men who brutally assaulted an unfortunate hooker, who eventually dies from the encounter, thus leaving Big Whisky in suspense, waiting to see the men who brutally harmed her. William Munny, accompanied by Schofield and at one point also joined by his notorious former partner, Ned Logan, makes the unpleasant journey north towards Big Whisky. Like them, everyone's curiosity is piqued about whether or not they will finally meet their demise in Big Whisky. Upon his arrival, Munny initially becomes wary of the bounty offered for the capture or killing of the men who savagely brutalized the street prostitute and agrees to take on the task. Little does he know, however, he is heading into a most unquiet of places with tensions running high as corruption oozes from nearly every available crack.

A one-time watch suspense flick, that absolutely falls apart upon a second viewing. I appreciate the directness of the shots typical in Korean cinema, which gives a sense of authenticity and impact.

What an evil, yet powerful ending! The entire story seems designed to build towards it. Looking back, you might spot some plot holes, but I won't spoil anything. The beginning might feel a bit dull and the suspense isn't always strong, but this ending makes it worth watching. South Korea produces many excellent crime films. The nation's collective psyche is truly fascinating.

Often, the full extent of your punishment is already set in motion the moment you commit that first wrong.
