In the margins of history, there's a young officer, a portrait artist of horses, who perishes on the battlefield. Two teenage German youths, turned deserters, are executed. A beautiful young woman and her elderly grandfather. British and German soldiers, haggling on the frontlines, united only by the need to free a horse entangled in barbed wire. And then there's a boy and his war horse. As the film progresses, sobs echo throughout the cinema, my neighbor, an old man, wiping his eyes with his popcorn box.

Absolutely a five-star recommendation and definitely one of the best movies of the year, though it's a bit too crafted, even calculated. Luckily, that's not necessarily a bad thing; last year's "The King's Speech" was similarly meticulously crafted, wasn't it? The cinematography and music in "War Horse" are simply breathtaking – it's a complete loss if you don't see it on the big screen! The sunset at the end had echoes of "Gone with the Wind"…

Having watched the Titanic trailer right before this, my tear ducts were already primed! And this film just unleashed a flood of tears TOT. A perfect ending would have been if the boy ended up with the granddaughter of that old man!

*The First World War's destruction is shown through the eyes of Joey, a horse with more heart than any soldier. A touching story about loyalty and loss in a world torn apart.*
