Plot

Wham!'s rise to fame is a testament to the power of music, friendship, and a bit of luck. Formed in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, the duo would soon captivate audiences worldwide with their unique blend of catchy pop hooks, slick harmonies, and a distinctly British sense of style. George and Andrew first met in 1978 at Bushey Meads School in Hertfordshire, England. They bonded over their shared love of music and sports, and before long, they began performing together as The Executive, with George playing guitar and Andrew on bass. Their initial sound was heavily influenced by the glam-rock of David Bowie and the new wave of The Cure. Over the next few years, their musical direction shifted to a more polished, pop-infused style, with George taking on lead vocals and songwriting duties. In 1981, they shortened their name to Wham!, a catchy moniker that seemed to encapsulate their youthful energy and optimism. The early days of Wham! were marked by tireless touring, with the duo performing at numerous gigs and events throughout the UK. They released their debut single, "Bad Boys," in 1982, but it failed to gain much traction. However, their subsequent single, "Wham Rap!," began to generate interest, particularly after it aired on BBC Radio 1's "Top of the Pops" program. Wham!'s big breakthrough came in 1983 with the release of their debut album, "Fantastic," which included the hit single "Club Tropicana." The song, with its tongue-in-cheek lyrics and memorable chorus, captured the essence of 1980s British youth culture, and soon, Wham! became an overnight sensation. In 1984, Wham! released their second album, "Make It Big," which spawned a string of hit singles, including the iconic "Careless Whisper," "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," and "Freedom." With their music, style, and charisma all in place, the duo's popularity soared to unprecedented heights. Their 1984–1985 "Make It Big" tour, with its elaborate stage shows and energetic live performances, cemented Wham!'s status as one of the world's top pop acts. The tour was a massive hit in Europe and the US, breaking numerous attendance records and selling out massive venues like London's Wembley Stadium. Behind the scenes, however, tensions began to rise within the duo. George and Andrew's different approaches to music and their relationship led to creative differences and disagreements about their future direction. Despite these challenges, Wham! continued to produce music at a prolific rate, releasing the albums "Music from the Edge of Heaven" in 1986 and "The Final," which was intended to be their final album, but ultimately, their decision to disband. In 1986, George Michael announced that Wham! would be coming to an end, citing burnout and creative exhaustion. The duo embarked on their final tour, which concluded with a massive show at Wembley Stadium. After their split, George Michael went on to achieve enormous success as a solo artist, while Andrew Ridgeley pursued a successful career in various business ventures and music management. Throughout the years, Wham!'s songs and legacy have endured, influencing generations of artists and fans. Their impact on 1980s pop culture is still evident today, with their music remaining timeless and infectious. George and Andrew's friendship, though complicated, has also stood the test of time, with the duo remaining on good terms despite their differences. The documentary "Where Are We Now?" offers a candid look at the highs and lows of Wham!'s tumultuous career, as George and Andrew reminisce about their time together, sharing intimate stories and anecdotes that reveal the duo's personalities and experiences. The film is a testament to the enduring power of music to bring people together and to the indomitable spirit of two talented friends who dared to chase their dreams, no matter what lay ahead.
