Whatever It Takes

Plot

In the midst of high school's social hierarchy, two individuals find themselves caught in a cycle of unrequited love and misplaced affections. Ryan Woodman, a bespectacled and book-smart teenager, is smitten with Ashley Grant, the epitome of high school cool - beautiful, charming, and seemingly out of his league. On the opposite side of the cafeteria, dim-witted star athlete Chris Campbell spots Maggie Carter, the intelligent and kind-hearted companion of Ryan's, as the perfect trophy to further solidify his athletic reputation. Frustrated but determined, Ryan and Chris form an unlikely alliance to assist each other in their romantic pursuits. They concoct a plan to help each other impress their respective objects of affection and navigate the complexities of high school social dynamics. Ryan, with Chris's guidance, attempts to emulate the confident, charming facade of his rival; meanwhile, Chris employs Ryan's cerebral approach to win Maggie's heart. Initially, the strategy seems to yield positive results. Ryan becomes increasingly confident, and Maggie finds herself drawn to his newfound enthusiasm. Conversely, Chris, with Ryan's advice, learns to appreciate Maggie's intellect and personality, earning her attention in the process. The two friends witness the fruits of their labor as they appear to close in on their respective goals. However, as time passes, subtle cracks begin to form in their plans. Ryan starts to notice the genuine affection Maggie displays towards him and begins to wonder if his initial crush on Ashley was merely an idealized fantasy. Conversely, Chris develops feelings for Maggie beyond mere admiration, raising doubts about his motivations for pursuing her in the first place. Ryan realizes that his infatuation with Ashley was not a deep emotional connection but rather an unattainable fantasy he's perpetuated out of fear. Ashley, too, displays her true nature, showcasing a shallow, self-absorbed side. It becomes apparent that she only valued Ryan for his intelligence but never considered his feelings or potential as a partner. Similarly, Chris starts to question his intentions in seeking Maggie's affections. As he witnesses Maggie's compassion, vulnerability, and genuine interest in Ryan's life, he begins to see her not as a trophy, but as an individual worth getting to know. He eventually starts to appreciate Maggie's quirks and insecurities, recognizing the deep connection they could share. In hindsight, Chris acknowledges that his initial desire to 'be with' Maggie was rooted in an ego-driven need to win a challenge, rather than any serious interest in truly knowing her. Ultimately, both friends undergo an epiphany that prompts a significant shift in their perspectives. They come to realize that their affections and desires had been misguided, misdirected by societal expectations, external pressures, and shallow perceptions. The facade they initially tried to impose upon themselves and others crumbles, and genuine emotional connections begin to form. As the dust settles, Ryan and Maggie find themselves on the cusp of a beautiful, authentic relationship. The film ultimately resolves with an appreciation for self-awareness, growth, and the realization that love should never be predicated upon superficial qualities, but rather genuine emotional connections with others. Their newfound partnership represents a celebration of the power of self-discovery, genuine connections, and the triumph of authentic love over social expectations and shallow desires.
