Over the next several days, Novalee forages for food, clothes, and shelter within the Wal-Mart store, where she also gives birth to her daughter, Americus. As the days turn into weeks, Novalee becomes a familiar face at the local Wal-Mart, where she's taken in by the store's employees. They're shocked by her situation but decide to take her under their wing, providing her with food and clothes. Through their support, Novalee begins to see herself in a new light and realizes that she's capable of more than she ever thought possible. As Novalee grows and adapts to her new life, she begins to think about the future and making plans for herself and Americus. She applies for a job at the local bank, where she's rejected due to her lack of education. However, she perseveres and eventually lands a job at a local fast-food restaurant. Through her work, Novalee is able to provide a better future for herself and her daughter.
