Why Him?

Plot

Ned Fleming, a middle-class father from Michigan, seems like your average Joe. He's a humble shoe salesman in a small town, married to Linda, and has a daughter named Stephanie. They're a close-knit family who values simplicity and honesty. However, their world is turned upside down when Stephanie comes home from college, introducing them to her wealthy and charismatic boyfriend, Nigel Barrett. Nigel, the heir to the tech mogul Barrett Industries, is everything Ned despises: rich, spoiled, and lacking in genuine qualities. He's an eccentric, self-absorbed, and shallow playboy who flaunts his wealth by buying expensive cars and wearing designer clothing. As soon as Ned and Linda meet Nigel, they realize that he's trouble. His condescending attitude and overconfidence rub Ned the wrong way, and the two quickly become adversaries. Ned is not just concerned about Nigel's influence on Stephanie; he's also terrified of losing his daughter to the world of luxury and materialism. As Nigel becomes a regular fixture in their lives, Ned's jealousy and anger intensify. He's convinced that Nigel is using Stephanie for her looks and wealth, rather than genuinely caring for her. The tension between Ned and Nigel escalates as the former tries to sabotage their budding relationship. He concocts a series of ridiculous schemes to scare Nigel off, including a plan to break into Nigel's mansion and vandalizing his expensive car. However, these attempts only seem to make Nigel more intrigued by Stephanie. Despite her disapproving father's efforts, Stephanie finds herself torn between her love for her family and her affection for Nigel. She knows that her dad doesn't trust him, and she wishes he could see beyond his wealth and superficial charm. As the story unfolds, however, it becomes clear that Nigel's intentions are more complex than Ned initially thought. Through a series of flashbacks, it's revealed that Nigel is the product of a dysfunctional family and has had to navigate the cutthroat world of high society since he was a child. Despite his wealth and privilege, he's desperate to prove himself and earn the love and respect of his parents. Meanwhile, Ned is struggling to come to terms with his own feelings of inadequacy. His marriage is suffering, and his relationship with Stephanie is strained. He feels like he's losing control and is desperate to prove to himself and his wife that he's still a capable and loving father. As the battle between Ned and Nigel reaches its climax, the two men engage in a series of absurd and hilarious battles. From a wild goose chase through the city to a disastrous dinner party, the rivalry between them becomes increasingly absurd. Ultimately, Ned is forced to confront his own fears and biases, and he realizes that Nigel might not be as insidious as he initially thought. In a touching moment of introspection, Ned acknowledges that he's been acting irrationally and recognizes that Nigel has brought a new level of excitement and joy into Stephanie's life. Through its witty humor and heartwarming performances, Why Him? shows that people from different social classes can't be reduced to stereotypes. It's a film that celebrates the complexities of human relationships and encourages us to look beyond surface-level impressions.
