Wild Card

Plot

Wild Card, a 2015 action thriller, revolves around Nick Wild (Jason Statham), a former Army Ranger turned Las Vegas bodyguard. Nick boasts exceptional combat skills, finesse, and precision, making him an elite protector for the wealthy and influential in Sin City. However, he has a darker side, a vice that threatens his meticulously crafted façade: a crippling addiction to gambling. As the story unfolds, we see Nick navigating the complex landscape of high stakes protection, managing the demands of his various clients, while ensuring the silence and loyalty of his employees. In one of these encounters, he inadvertently gets entangled with Shiro (Loan Nguyen), a skilled Vietnamese assassin hired for a high-stakes casino heist. When Shiro spots one of their intended targets is a high-roller friend of a Russian mob boss, they get apprehended by the authorities. The situation snowballs: the victim turns out to be a key player in the Russian mob in Las Vegas, connected to the man responsible for Nick's failing horse track bets being discovered by the loan sharks. Nick finds himself entangled with the Russian gangster, Bellicose Viktor Koriev (Milo Ventimiglia), who has devised a cunning ploy to confiscate the local casino. Nick has to navigate the intricate web of high-stakes gangland politics, trying to reason his way out of trouble with both the mobsters and loan sharks. An affair blossoms and becomes complicated through his involvement with Holly (Dominique Perrault), a local prostitute to evade trouble with the loan sharks. Holly finds Nick's lifestyle difficult to accept because of his moral lapse toward risk and substance addiction. Complications also arise as she must confront a threat from Shiro and manages a genuine attraction towards him. Meanwhile, Nick is confronted by a Russian-speaking thug, while losing all that he has managed to gather as money for the loan sharks, he becomes an unwilling participant in Viktor Koriev's heist, where they could capture the wealth of the notorious Russian crime syndicate. Despite Nick's incredible aptitude for combat and planning, things start to take a turn for the worse; an unexpected blunder – in form of his getting caught on camera – ends up pushing the fragile balance to a tipping point. Told in an enticing manner, with mesmerizing scenes drawn from both the world of a rough Las Vegas and the danger and crime that befall in this labyrinth city, Wild Card is a compelling take on the notion that an elite yet seemingly untouchable human being must confront a mountain of responsibility at a price so steep it seems that his desperate strategy is ultimately a "Wild Card". Nick has spent most of his life building walls, but they are bound to crumble under the pressure from Koriev. At the moment of the countdown, Nick makes a high-stakes mission to throw a wrench at Viktor's Las Vegas scheme: the final Wild Card gamble made, one not backed by his calculating prowess, but more by Nick's desire to help and his concern for those around him, and a genuine – almost impossible – attempt at redemption. Underlying his entire survival quest lies the pursuit of escaping from loan sharks, trying to hold onto that which is very important to him – an unshaken solidarity with those who need protection and genuine love from those – Holly, she especially had gotten mired into Nick's desperation – who see him through substance addiction, danger, and, consequently, struggle towards a self-discovery driven by the choices he would take at high-stakes, turning his Wild Card to a true Wild Card gamble of hope for personal redemption, forgiveness, and a fresh tomorrow.

Also known as "A Hustler's Pure Love Story," it's quite explicit with a lot of nudity. Unexpectedly, it turns out to be a pure, almost fairy-tale romance. Félix's performance is seamless and natural, making it his most outstanding work in recent appearances. The first three-quarters, with its documentary-style narration, is highly engaging, and you can really empathize with the protagonist's experiences and emotions. The ending becomes melodramatic and unrealistic. As a dirty, smelly homeless person with a contagious disease, you're complaining that your wealthy, protective sugar daddy is old and ugly? Please.
