Plot
Kathleen Kelly is the owner of The Shop Around the Corner, a small, yet charming independent bookstore in New York City's SoHo neighborhood. Joe Fox, on the other hand, is the magnate behind FoxBooks, a large chain of superstores that sell not only books but also music and other personal care products. FoxBooks is rapidly expanding and looks to take over the book retail market by offering a wider selection of books, including hard-to-find titles, at discounted prices. The FoxBooks chain poses a significant threat to independent bookstores like The Shop Around the Corner, which rely on loyal customers and personalized service to thrive. As FoxBooks continues to expand, Joe and Kathleen, unaware of each other's identities, engage in a heated online battle. Kathleen, under the pseudonym "Shopgirl," writes scathing reviews of FoxBooks on a local online forum, criticizing the chain's impersonal service and limited selection. Joe, using the alias "NY152," responds with clever, yet caustic, remarks, defending FoxBooks and attacking Kathleen's views. As the online debate rages on, Kathleen and Joe begin to develop a sense of familiarity with each other. They bond over their shared love of reading and books, and their witty banter becomes more playful and flirtatious. Unbeknownst to them, they are engaged in a virtual romance, with Kathleen and Joe growing closer with each passing day. Meanwhile, their real-life relationships suffer. Kathleen's fiancé, Frank Navasky, a lawyer, tries to convince her to sell the bookstore to FoxBooks, but she's resistant to the idea. Joe's business partner, Patricia Eden, is worried about the impact of the FoxBooks expansion on the company's reputation. The first meeting between Kathleen and Joe takes place at a bookstore conference, where Joe delivers a keynote speech on the future of book retail. Kathleen attends the conference, hoping to pick up some business tips to compete with FoxBooks. As Joe takes the stage, Kathleen is immediately drawn to his charisma and charm. In a moment of awkwardness, their eyes lock, and they share an instant connection. As they continue to date online, Kathleen and Joe deepen their relationship. They discuss books, share personal stories, and laugh together. Kathleen begins to question her feelings for Frank, who is more and more invested in selling the bookstore to FoxBooks. Joe, too, starts to reevaluate his business practices, wondering if his pursuit of success is worth the cost of putting small businesses like The Shop Around the Corner out of commission. The tension between their online romance and their real-life rivalry comes to a head when Kathleen discovers Joe's true identity as the owner of FoxBooks. She feels betrayed and hurt, realizing that Joe has been manipulating the online situation to get to her. Joe, however, explains that he only wanted to be honest with her in person, but couldn't find a way to reveal his identity without jeopardizing their budding relationship. As Kathleen grapples with her emotions, she must also confront the reality of her bookstore's struggles. Frank's proposal to sell to FoxBooks gains traction, but the thought of Kathleen selling her beloved bookstore to the very company that's been putting her out of business is unthinkable. In a touching finale, Kathleen and Joe meet in person, and their initial awkwardness gives way to a deep and abiding connection. They come to a mutual understanding: Kathleen will keep her bookstore, and Joe will rethink his business practices to support small, independent businesses like hers. Frank, sensing Kathleen's unhappiness, releases her from their engagement, allowing her to pursue her passion for books. The movie concludes with Kathleen and Joe walking hand in hand through the bookshelves of The Shop Around the Corner, their online romance blossoming into a real-life love affair. As they look to the future, they know that their love and commitment to each other will help them navigate the challenges of the book retail industry and create a brighter future for their beloved store.
