A feel-good, family-friendly film, "New Year's Eve" shows more sincerity than many others. Thankfully, no forced trendy songs! Instead, it's a collection of slightly melodramatic but earnest stories, without trying too hard to be hip or resorting to cheap gags. The writers put in the work, and that's worth appreciating. If you go into a movie knowing exactly what you're going to get, it's a bit unfair to then complain that it wasn't full of surprises. That's on the viewer.

Compared to Spring Festival Gala skits or Lunar New Year comedies, it's far more sophisticated than the typical Feng Xiaogang fare.
