A Whisker Away

Plot
A Whisker Away is a 2021 Japanese animated film that follows the story of Miyo "Spike" Saimiya, an eccentric and introverted high school girl who harbors an unrequited crush on a prominent violinist named Mune. She often finds herself lost in the enchanting melodies of the violin, transporting her to a world of fantasy and escape. In an attempt to catch Mune's attention, Miyo transforms into a stray cat using a magical notebook known as "Ueno-san." This transformation seems like the perfect solution to her unreciprocated feelings, as Mune is naturally drawn to the charming feline creature. Posing as the cat, Miyo observes Mune from a safe distance, pretending to be a stray that has wandered into his life. As she spends more time around Mune, the violinist begins to talk to the "cat" as if it were a person, forming an unlikely bond. As the days go by, Miyo becomes increasingly comfortable in her cat form, allowing her to navigate the complexities of Mune's world with ease. The cat version of Miyo, affectionately named "Mocha" by Mune, finds herself becoming more confident as she interacts with her human counterpart, often crossing paths with him without him realizing that they're the same being. However, the fusion of human and animal begins to blur the lines between reality and fantasy, leading to a series of surreal and dreamlike scenarios. In these situations, Miyo finds herself becoming trapped between two worlds, as her human and cat personas start to confuse each other. The fragile boundary between her human and feline forms starts to flicker, causing Miyo to lose her sense of identity and confront the consequences of her actions. Miyo's growing attachment to Mune and her cat form takes on a life of its own, fueling a mysterious pull that echoes across the city. Her cat, Mocha, experiences a world beyond Mune's violin, navigating the darker aspects of life as a stray cat forced to fend for itself in a busy metropolis. Throughout her cat form, Miyo becomes exposed to Mune's world, which is at times strange and disjointed, full of fragmented melodies that could only be heard through someone with experience of the raw emotional impact of life and death. Her obsession with Mune deepens, influencing her understanding of music, cat life, and human experience. But beneath these increasingly complex web of emotions, a nagging doubt emerges at the core of Miyo's being. As the line between her human and cat forms starts to fade, she is forced to confront the choices she has made. The stakes become higher as the distinction between Mocha and Miyo becomes harder to distinguish, threatening to erase her identity altogether. As the narrative hurtles toward its climactic conclusion, Miyo is faced with a heart-wrenching choice that will dictate the course of her existence. A Whisker Away masterfully explores the intricate balance between reality and fantasy, the fragility of human emotions, and the depths of the human experience. Through the captivating narrative, the film takes the audience on a poignant and mesmerizing journey that blends the surreal with the personal, leaving viewers with a gripping exploration of the intricacies of life, loss, and identity.

Obsessive chasing ends in emptiness, but obsessive purr-suit leads to everything.

Utterly unremarkable.

If you were to watch this in a cinema, you might feel like you've wasted your money... The plot is too cliché, and the main character's personality isn't very likable. However, the music by Yorushika is fantastic!

Ugh... so many recent Japanese animated films are just Miyazaki's fantastical stories and character designs mixed with Shinkai's beautiful visuals and pure love stories. Boring, so boring.
