Annabelle: Creation

Plot

Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to The Conjuring series, playing the events that ultimately led to the creation of one of the most infamous dolls in horror history. The film revolves around Samuel Müller, a skilled craftsman who, along with his wife Esther, has been operating a porcelain doll-making business out of their isolated mansion. The couple has been struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss of their young daughter Annabelle who died prematurely. The story takes place in 1946, in London, after World War II. Samuel, in a bid to channel his grief into his work, starts crafting a series of porcelain dolls in his wife's honor. Esther, while understanding Samuel's motivations, remains skeptical about their usefulness in helping him cope with their daughter's passing. One day, a nun named Sister Charlotte strolls up to the doorstep of the Müller's mansion, offering a proposition - join the local orphanage in manufacturing porcelain dolls as an in-house workshop, utilizing the skills of the recently paralyzed artist. The promise of this opportunity touches Samuel's heart, allowing him a sense of purpose and possibly restoring his crafts to their former glory. Initially, Samuel accepts the offer and Sister Charlotte selects several young girls from various orphanages and they all are brought to the Müller's mansion to join Samuel's workshop. Among the young girls selected are a group of children hailing from the nearby St. Benedict's Orphanage, where they've known tragedy firsthand and shown remarkable resilience and hope to help Samuel cope with their orphaned backgrounds. Sister Emily, a beautiful, yet slightly eccentric, orphan named Janice and Janis's friend the girls lead an expedition to the creation of hundreds of dolls. Given the doll maker's exceptional talents, his work flourishes as his employees learn various skills and help give life back to the dolls crafted with precision and craftsmanship. However, eerie occurrences gradually begin to plague the Müller's mansion, largely due to one girl's sensitivity to the environment of fear and dread that ensnares the household. Samuel eventually learns that eleven-year-old Annabelle Higgins—a creepy, malnourished girl with a particularly unquiet past, displays unmatched mental fortitude & with unique, and an unsettlingly high level of perception, recognizes signs of evil. Upon initial reflection of her background it's clear she may have made Annabelle react adversely following their unusual engagement in that night. Ultimately these developments make Annabelle appear to exude an otherworldly presence. Sister Charlotte witnesses first-hand how Annabelle often inadvertently attracts extraordinary happenings of malevolent nature from the moment she steps into the workshop. According to her account, it's almost as if she is able to amplify destructive energies and possibly serve as some kind of dark conduit to the horror that terrorizes the household. Whatever it is that's at play here, Sister knows well that if she stays there while taking care of the spirits via a series of futile rituals will begin to unravel one by one. After a ghastly confrontation with eerie visions resulting in her injuries in a tragic climax that defies logic & faith Samuel decides that they must end this presence. In a tense and foreboding climax, Samuel must confront and put an end to Annabelle's presence. A seemingly routine ritual, instead unfolds into an instant sense of all-out chaos. Samuel takes every last step he can to be rid of Annabelle, yet we know that a series of events will inevitably unravel and claim lives in a dark narrative to unfold in years to come.
