Book of Dragons

Plot

Set in the mythical land of Berk, where Vikings and dragons coexist in a world of wonder and discovery, the story of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" had already given audiences a glimpse into the life of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the lovable and resourceful young Viking who defied tradition by befriend ing and training a dragon of his own. In the sequel, "How to Train Your Dragon: School of Dragons" would eventually branch off into the separate animated series, but this film, "Book of Dragons," returns to a similar theme, delving deeper into the history and secrets of dragon training, as told through the collective voices of Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless, and the stout dwarf Gobber. According to the legend of Berk, the Book of Dragons holds the story behind the foundation of the Viking's dragon training tradition. This ancient text outlines the laws of respect, strength, and wisdom in building bonds with the majestic creatures. As narrated by Hiccup, the Book of Dragons highlights crucial moments and lessons in his own journey of becoming a dragon trainer. Emphasizing that understanding and friendship come before training, Hiccup urges the audience to be respectful and patient in building the trust with the dragons. Furthermore, Astrid injects a dose of realism, conveying the importance of careful research and keen observation when approaching these foreign creatures. She presents a balanced view of her experience working with Toothless, contrasting his unpredictability with caution. Nonetheless, her unwavering commitment and communication helped strengthen their bond over time. These contrasts between each narrator add a sense of familiarity and accountability as their stories reinforce the fundamental lesson of embracing a compatible learning attitude, so pivotal in the art of training dragons. In the sections that focus on the training techniques, the film divides its screen time between a male and female lead, observing their various methods in training a common subject - a large fire-breathing dragon known for being the most powerful. One narrator reveals a formula based on strong adrenaline, discipline, and obedience. This individual believes in pushing the dragon past its limits while forging powerful allegiance. However, the opposing training strategy takes an empathetic approach. Among a sequence of hand gestures and gentle persuasion, the other trainer tries to connect with the dragon through understanding, urging and appreciating the new creature's reactions. Inspired by Astrid's dynamic perspective during their interactive scenes, we are aware of both leadership and an immense affection - an ongoing balance the audience should mimic throughout the time. Ultimately, the Book of Dragons serves as a wise sourcebook on animal training, equipping young trainers with helpful tools and storytelling of personal histories on building ties with dragons.
