Plot

Breakdown is a 1997 thriller film written and directed by Jonathan Mostow. The movie focuses on the relationship between Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) and his wife Amy (J.T. Walsh) - a seemingly stable and comfortable middle-aged American couple. Their lives are turned upside down during a long cross-country drive when their luxury SUV breaks down in the middle of the New Mexico desert. The desolate and unforgiving landscape adds to the tension and isolation of the situation. As Jeff attempts to repair their vehicle, Amy catches a ride from a passing truck driver in order to reach the closest town, where they can seek assistance to get their car fixed. She makes it to the small town of Truth or Consequences, where she arrives at a café and contacts a local mechanic for assistance. Meanwhile, Jeff finally manages to fix the car and makes his way to the town, hoping to find his wife and continue their holiday. However, his efforts are for naught, as when he finally arrives at the café, he discovers that Amy has vanished. Initially, they suspect that Amy may have left on another vehicle, but as they investigate further, they realize that she was taken by the truck driver, who turns out to be a menacing figure. The truck driver, Jack (Richard Portnow), had picked up Amy from the side of the road, knowing full well that she would be an easy target for a predator, and he is not the first person in the story that they encountered. In reality, the driver of the first pickup truck that helped them when their SUV broke down had also been a predator trying to deceive the pair into becoming victims of a scam. However, before Jack can act on his sinister intentions, Jeff Taylor manages to evade his clutches. In the end, as the couple continues to navigate the isolated terrain with no assistance, the film builds up to a thrilling confrontation between Jeff and the sinister truck driver. With Jeff's resourcefulness and determination, he manages to rescue Amy from captivity and exact revenge on Jack, ensuring that justice is done for the wrongs that he has committed. Throughout the movie, Kurt Russell's portrayal of a worried and distraught husband perfectly captures the desperation and anguish of a man desperate to find his partner in a desolate and hostile environment.
