Michael Newman, a driven and ambitious workaholic, has been neglecting his family for far too long. His wife, Donna, and their children, Sam and Jay, are always left waiting for him to return home, often exhausted from a long day at the office. Michael's obsession with his career is all-consuming, driving him to push himself to the limit. He hopes to impress his demanding boss, Bill Amstetter, and secure a well-deserved promotion. Michael's life is much like a never-ending to-do list, with each day filled with a blur of meetings, presentations, and late nights at the office. However, he has no time to focus on the people he loves the most – his family. One day, while navigating the aisles of a quirky electronics store, Michael meets Morty, the store's eccentric sales clerk. Morty's childlike enthusiasm and offbeat sense of humor catch Michael's attention, and they strike up an unusual friendship. During their conversation, Morty mentions a magical universal remote control that can change your life, control your time, and control your family. Intrigued, Michael purchases the remote, known as 'Sonystyle 9000', and its inventor, Sonny Krieger. Although the device seems ordinary, Michael soon realizes that it has incredible capabilities – he can use it to stop time itself, rewind to previous moments, and speed up through the mundane moments of everyday life. At first, the Sonystyle 9000 appears to be the answer to Michael's prayers. He uses it to breeze through his inane meetings, get ahead in his career, and surprise his family with small gifts. His children are amazed by the quirky little gadgets he shows them, and his wife is touched by the thoughtful presents he chooses for her. Feeling overwhelmed, Michael tries to manage the remote's functions as his control over time increases, manipulating his personal relationships to suit his ambitions. However, the allure of the remote soon proves to be a slippery slope. Michael finds himself skipping past precious moments – unjoyed recollections with his loved ones, stunning landscapes and cityscapes as he speeds through, all blended and faded, looking un-lived. The convenience of stopping time leads him to neglect and abandon his relationships with those who matter most. His family's affection begins to wane, and their bonds weaken as Michael neglects them over time. The device that was initially at the heart of his dream promotion, suddenly begins standing between him and his heart. As the days blend together, Michael begins to reach a breaking point in his life. He finds himself wondering why he needs all this stuff in the first place. Feeling tired, disenchanted, and disconnected from his family, he takes a closer look at what has been created in his personal world – specifically, it's become boringly flat for both him and his family. His heart longed for beautiful loving connection with his loved ones. A big change is about to take place, for the better better. On Thanksgiving, Michael presses the 'Auto record stop time' and accidentally records the special night into the Sonystone 9000, which is the result of several attempts at recording nearly every night in Michael's life. Not knowing the program had the day's event; after going through all of Michael's different attempts (via 'Auto record stop time'), when he presses play, it takes the recording from the special day to his current time; Michael witnessed his life nearly passing him by. Every little moment with his loved ones. A humbled and chastened Michael returns to the electronics store, longing for a solution to the emptiness he has been experiencing. Sonny, who has become close friends with Morty, understands the reasons why Michael became a victim of the device's malfunction. Michael begins to see the beauty in living life, un-manipulated and un-stopped. He begins to cherish precious moments with his family, who have been desperately yearning for his attention. In the end, Michael realizes that the remote has not given him what he truly desired – success and wealth, but rather, it stole them away from his family, the very things that truly mattered. The device he initially thought would solve his problems ultimately took everything important from his life.
