Clueless

Plot

In the iconic 1995 teen comedy film, Clueless, director Amy Heckerling crafts a witty and engaging narrative that explores themes of identity, class, and social status, all through the lens of a wealthy and charismatic protagonist. Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, is a quintessential Beverly Hills high school student who embodies the very essence of cool. Her blonde hair, fashion sense, and charming personality make her the go-to matchmaker for her friends. Cher's confidence and self-assurance allow her to manipulate those around her, often with great success. She sets her sights on pairing two teachers - her algebra teacher, Mr. Hall, and her drama teacher, Miss Geist - and, much to her delight, concocts a plan to bring them together. With her trademark wit and persuasive charm, Cher convinces Tai, her new South Central student friend, to switch places with her and attend a party at the most popular kid in school, Travis - the dashing Christian '-Christian' Slater's equivalent - with mixed results. She then devises a seemingly foolproof plan to win the heart of her long-time crush, Josh, by presenting him with a perfect match – and ultimately proving just how shallow and manipulative she can truly be. Upon witnessing Tai's remarkable transformation in popularity, Cher becomes consumed by insecurity and a gnawing sense of disconnection from her own identity. Despite being beautiful, smart, and influential, Cher realizes that her shallowness renders her unable to truly connect with others or grasp the complexity of the world around her. Josh, played by Paul Rudd, has always seen right through Cher's façade, consistently calling her out for her callousness and general tone-deafness towards social realities. He is exasperated by her decision to publicly humiliate Tai in front of their peers and the way she manipulates and pokes fun at those beneath her social station. When Tai acquires her 'new look', Cher becomes dismissive of Tai's improvements in the 'social hierarchy', beginning to feel humiliated by Tai's new status and friend connections - highlighting the very depth of her own self-absorption and insecurity. Cher reaches the painful conclusion that her makeover for Tai was not an act of kindness or a way of extending a genuine friendship, but rather a way of lifting herself up by connecting with someone perceived as 'beneath her’. In realizing her error, Cher starts to shake off the superficial aspects of her high school identity and develop a heightened sense of empathy for others. Furthermore, when Josh reveals his disapproval of Cher's poor treatment of Tai and refusal to listen to his advice about letting go of her need to match everyone around her, Cher reflects on her relationships with her stepbrother Josh and Tai. Seeing herself through Josh's eyes leads Cher to confront the reality that she treats people as objects to be manipulated, rather than genuine friendships. Cher undergoes a dramatic transformation from being a self-absorbed matchmaker to acknowledging her flaws and being kinder and more compassionate towards the relationships she forms. Throughout its run, Clueless skillfully avoids resorting to traditional 90s teen flick tropes, taking instead a refreshing look at the upper-middle-class lifestyle and social hierarchy that typifies Beverly Hills culture. Director Heckerling gives voice to the '90s' notorious pampered and indulged generation, along with its cultural pretensions and social hypocrisies, all filtered through the poignant portrayal of Cher's epic fail and subsequent quest for self-awareness. The Clueless mastermind Amy Heckerling expertly navigates Cher's journey towards self-discovery and redemption, turning what could have been an empty satirical commentary into a charming and thought-provoking commentary on timeless teenage themes.

AS IF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is totally the chick flick bible! Cher is the most adorably clueless (but well-meaning) queen I've ever seen, Paul Rudd is ridiculously charming, and Brittany Murphy's in it?! The dialogue is both hilariously catty and surprisingly witty; I especially love the conversation they have after Tai fails to snag the popular guy. No wonder Fancy paid homage to it – it's a classic for a reason!

Okay, so "Clueless" predicted the drop-crotch pants trend way back in the '90s? Feeling bad for the scene kids who thought they were being original. As if!

Old-school teen movies may be mindless, but they win with their vigor and optimism. The rich girl here is justified in flaunting her charm without the mean-spirited vibes you see today. Besides, the whole movie feels like it's about to break into "I'm So Fancy, You Already Know..." Iggy Azalea definitely ripped off this movie for that music video – the resemblance is uncanny!
