Plot

Crime Story is a 1986 American crime comedy-drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring Peter Dobson and John Ashton. The movie takes place in Chicago in the 1920s and follows the story of Lt. Mike Torello (played by Dennis Farina), a tough and resourceful police detective from the city's Organized Crime Unit, and Jack Carter (played by Howard E. Rollins Jr.), a highly decorated FBI agent assigned to protect John Stillman (played by Ray Sharkey), a wealthy and powerful mobster. The film begins with an opening voiceover by Jack Carter, setting the tone for the movie as he explains his backstory and his current assignment to protect John Stillman. Jack is a proud African American FBI agent who has worked his way up through the ranks, earning the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his peers. He is paired with Lt. Mike Torello, a grizzled and experienced detective who has spent years fighting organized crime in Chicago. Despite their differences, the two men quickly develop a professional rapport, working together to uncover the truth behind Stillman's kidnapping. Initially, Jack and Mike's investigation suggests that Stillman's kidnapping is the work of a small-time crook trying to make a name for himself. However, as they dig deeper, they uncover a complex web of corruption and deceit that goes all the way to the top of Chicago's organized crime syndicates. Stillman, it turns out, is more than just a wealthy businessman - he is a cunning and ruthless operator who has built a vast empire through violence and intimidation. As Jack and Mike close in on the kidnappers, they realize that nothing is as it seems. The kidnappers are not just ordinary thugs; they are highly trained operatives working for a wealthy and influential businessman known only as "The Outfit." The Outfit is a shadowy organization that has infiltrated every level of Chicago's government and law enforcement, and its reach extends far beyond the city's borders. Despite the danger and complexity of the case, Jack and Mike persevere, using their combined skills and experience to stay one step ahead of the kidnappers and The Outfit. Along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including a young and ambitious journalist named Rita (played by Amy Madigan), who becomes embroiled in the case and helps to expose the truth behind Stillman's kidnapping. As the stakes grow higher, Jack and Mike realize that their investigation has attracted the attention of The Outfit's top echelons. They are faced with a daunting task: to infiltrate the heavily guarded inner circle of The Outfit, gather evidence, and bring Stillman and his kidnapping to justice. In a thrilling climax, Jack and Mike lead a daring raid on The Outfit's headquarters, using their combined skills and resources to take down the kidnappers and bring Stillman to safety. Throughout the movie, writer/director Stuart Rosenberg weaves a complex and engaging narrative that balances humor and drama, action and suspense. The film features a standout performance from Howard E. Rollins Jr., who brings gravity and depth to his portrayal of Jack Carter, and a strong supporting cast, including Dennis Farina as the tough and resourceful Lt. Mike Torello. Crime Story is a gripping and entertaining film that explores the complexities of corruption and the power of human determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
