Plot

"Cult" is set in the midst of South Korea's K-pop fervor, where the idol culture plays a significant role in shaping the nation's youth culture. Against this backdrop, three young female idols, Soo-yeon, Minju, and Ah-rin, find themselves thrust onto a late-night television show as part of a promotional stint for their latest album release. Unbeknownst to them, the evening's program has taken an unexpected turn, focusing on an exorcism that has garnered significant attention and sparked curiosity. The exorcist, Unsui, a well-respected and enigmatic figure in the world of paranormal investigation, explains to the audience, and subsequently the idols, that the Kaneda family has fallen prey to a particularly malevolent entity. The situation unfolds further, with Unsui admitting that he cannot exorcise the demon on his own, citing its immense power and the potential consequences of such a complex and delicate operation. Seizing the opportunity to demonstrate the gravity of the situation and the risks involved, Unsui invites Jun-hyeok, an experienced and highly skilled exorcist, to join him in attempting to rid the Kaneda family of the malevolent presence. This bold decision marks the beginning of a perilous and high-stakes journey, with both exorcists aware of the potential consequences, including the possibility of death. Unbeknownst to the idols, their presence on the show is soon overshadowed by the emergence of Hwang Tae-min, a reckless and arrogant ghost hunter with a reputation for pushing the boundaries of paranormal investigation. Hwang's arrival injects an air of unpredictability, as his actions often walk a fine line between professionalism and sheer recklessness. As the exorcists launch their investigation, the idols, who have grown more entrenched in the mystery, find themselves increasingly drawn into the heart of the ordeal. Their initial hesitation and skepticism gradually give way to a growing sense of unease as they witness the unfolding events. Unsettling and unexplained occurrences begin to plague the Kaneda family, leaving the trio questioning the true extent of their situation and whether they should intervene. Throughout the ordeal, the bonds between the idols grow stronger as they confront the darkness and face their deepest fears. Their friendship becomes a lifeline, with each supporting and encouraging the others as they navigate the treacherous landscape. As tensions escalate and the stakes rise, Soo-yeon, a seasoned idol with a deep understanding of the complexities of fame and pressure, finds herself taking on a leadership role, drawing inspiration from her own experiences to reassure and strengthen her companions. As the situation spirals out of control, Hwang's actions become increasingly erratic, leaving both the idols and the exorcists questioning his true motives. His intentions and the true extent of his knowledge about the malevolent entity become a source of growing unease, as some speculate that he may be more connected to the entity than initially apparent. The narrative hurtles towards a climactic and heart-stopping conclusion as Unsui and Jun-hyeok make a final push to banish the demon. Their efforts are fraught with obstacles, and just as the stakes reach their highest point, Hwang reveals information that challenges the understanding of the entity and the events unfolding before them. As the night wears on, and the tension continues to mount, the idols, Unsui, and Jun-hyeok find themselves drawn into a maelstrom of supernatural terror, battling against the unseen forces that threaten their very existence. With their courage waning and their resolve shaken, the bonds between the idols are put to the test as they face the ultimate challenge of confronting the darkness that has engulfed the Kaneda family. In the end, the idols emerge forever changed by their experiences, their perceptions of the world reshaped by the horrors they have witnessed. Their journey serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of confronting one's fears, even when the outcome seems all but certain.
