Den of Thieves

Plot
In the gritty, sun-scorched streets of Los Angeles, two worlds collide in a complex dance of crime and deception. On one side, we find an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, tasked with keeping the peace and upholding the law in the face of unrelenting chaos. On the other, a group of skilled and daring bank robbers, known for their cunning and ruthlessness, have set their sights on the ultimate heist: the Federal Reserve Bank. At the center of the robbery crew is Merriman (Pablo Schreiber), a tough-as-nails mastermind with a talent for infiltration and manipulation. His plan is ambitious, to say the least, and requires careful coordination and cunning to execute. The crew, which includes a diverse range of individuals with their own unique skills and motivations, has been assembled with one purpose in mind: to get in, get the loot, and get out without leaving a trail of evidence. As the crew begins to execute their plan, they are unwittingly unaware of the watchful eyes of Jerico (Christopher Wyn Cooper) and his partner, Big Rick (Laurence Frye). These officers are part of the elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, known for their skill, tenacity, and unwavering dedication to justice. Their focus is on protecting the citizens of Los Angeles from the likes of Merriman and his crew. The tension between the two groups is palpable, as each side engages in a game of cat and mouse. Jerico, with his sharp instincts and knowledge of the city's underworld, is determined to prevent the heist and bring Merriman and his crew to justice. Meanwhile, Merriman is just as determined to outsmart the law and get away with the impossible. The stakes are high, and the outcome hangs precariously in the balance. Jerico's determination is somewhat admirable, yet rooted in his need to gain a comfortable life, something of a contrasting theme compared to Merriman who is motivated by excitement or adrenaline seeking aspects. The two are different, with Jerico being portrayed as a careful planner which implies that he, like an officer that has a job with insurance, is comfortable, secure and more set in his ways, thus possibly more out of excitement whereas the excitement sought after by Merriman is a thrilling experience.

Okay, so I guess I built this movie up too much in my head based on the spoilers I heard, because honestly, it was just alright. But I gotta say, there's one shot I absolutely loved: when the villain's returning fire, using the car hood as cover, and he's bracing his shoulder. That pose was seriously badass! Also, I can't help but wonder... do guys with huge arms, thick waists and massive muscles get super winded when they have to run?

Haven't watched an action movie in ages, and this turned out to be the first new movie I saw in 2018! Ignoring the F-bombs dropped from beginning to end, the gunfights and plot in this movie were still engaging enough to keep me hooked.

Brains over brawn are key, although the plot has some flaws. The sound effects during the gunfights are incredibly realistic.
Mila
That final flashback felt like a slap in the face, treating the audience like complete idiots.
