Doctor Sleep

Plot
Dan Torrance, the son of a deceased caregiver, Jack Torrance, who was consumed by madness after being haunted by the dark forces within the walls of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The film 'Doctor Sleep' picks up where Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' left off, over thirty years after the events that forever scarred Dan and his mother, Wendy. Now in his mid-forties, Dan has managed to break free from the psychological trauma inflicted on him as a result of witnessing his father's downfall at the hotel. However, he is far from being a normal person. Dan struggles with ghosts of his own, haunted by memories of his past, including the brutal abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. John Brannock, the father of Wendy's longtime love Nick, had previously died from addiction. But in his past life, Dan discovered that he possessed a unique gift known as the "shine" - the ability to feel and see the energies or imprints that are left behind by traumatic events and that surround those in immense pain. This distinctive talent serves as a remnant of the trauma he has endured. Dan's story begins to take a turn when he meets Abra, an extraordinary 12-year-old girl possessing the "shine," just like him. Abra possesses the gift to the upmost potential and must hide it from the public eye, aware of the reality that certain people exist that would attempt to harm her or use her gift for their own malicious purposes. As Abra's gift grows in power, the first manifestations of a powerful and evil force begin to make their presence known to her. Dan encounters Abra when they both cross paths on the side of the road, and they form a bond when he discovers that Abra is being pursued by the same dark force that Dan had reckoned with as a child. Through his extensive travel, Dan becomes more dependent on drinking vodka to numb his pain, turning to substances in an attempt to mask his anxieties. This way of coping does little to alleviate his deep emotions. He begins leading a haphazard life, continuously moving from place to place. But as Dan starts his life anew, attempting to reestablish a normal existence with his love Sophia, he finds Abra. As the dark force ramps up its intimidation tactics against Abra, she finds herself in a terrible situation. Her attempts to fit into her odd group of odd friends are less and less successful. The strain in her relationship with her single mother intensifies as she becomes increasingly detached from reality. With her friends gone, her mood darkening, Abra becomes lonely, her life feels less worth living. Feeling lonely and isolated, Abra was unable to comprehend why she consistently felt a feeling of disconnection from others. Abra becomes aware that those hunting for her have taken the form of the wraiths, ghostly apparitions being their avatars. These hostile apparitions seem to aim to take over the "shine" gift found in the host of its body, exploiting their traumatic memories in dreadful ways. In essence, Abra becomes conscious that these unwanted energies could completely destroy her life. Dan forms a series of alliances, as when his current state is formed from the accumulated past memories of traumatic energies, he inevitably meets new persons who assist him with navigating a world as one with an insatiable dark presence. One of the companions Dan finds help in are Billy Freeman, a character that reminds Dan of his childhood friend Dick Hallorann. In his state, friendship seemed unrealistic. Dick and Dan had frequently found themselves entangled in experiences that linked their connection to the people in agony they have encountered. Together with Danny, who's aware that Billy Freeman shares the 'shine' but is more focused on utilizing it, they battle to rescue Abra from the wicked spirits. When considering that Torrance has come to appreciate the world in a peculiar way, those holding power over his enemies have had to be carefully observed. Trapped at school by an indomitable and frightful force, Abra - - a young girl without adult care - enlists support from her otherworldly abilities, trying to escape the terrifying experience. Dan Torrance, forever hurt by the bad memories he's been affected by as a result of his inescapable reality, is equally aware of his capability and feels the urge to help. Ultimately fighting alongside Abra, both find themselves teaming up in order to face danger presented by the forces of evil. As Abra's gifts progress, she starts battling two very distinct visions in her mind. These include experiencing more and more memories of her traumatized victims on one hand, and seeing ghostly faces and imprints while fighting with these painful emotions that have consumed her so deeply. As time goes by her state deteriorates rapidly. Once Abra is saved by Dan, it turns out that her fears and personal identity did finally cease. As she transforms and learns anew, Abra grows, discovering with the presence of her true personality an overpowering strength - a change inspired largely by Dan's will to change from childhood's fears and anxiety problems.
