Ghostland

Plot
Ghostland is a 2018 Canadian supernatural horror film directed by Pascal Laugier, based on the 2007 French-Swedish film Border, written by Joseph C. Milson. The film is a remake of Laugier's own 2007 film Martyrs but has some key differences. The film begins with a young mother, Andrea (Christina Hendricks), who moves into a sprawling, old country mansion with her two teenage daughters, Ava (Caroline Kometani) and Zoe (Taylor Hickson). Andrea is initially hesitant to settle into her new life, but the children seem to be enjoying their new home. The atmosphere is peaceful, with the family bonding over their love for the old mansion. However, on the night of Andrea's first anniversary of her mother's passing, the family decides to host a party. The evening's festivities are short-lived, as the family is confronted by a pair of masked, knife-wielding intruders who brutally murder Andrea and leave her and her daughters for dead. In a desperate bid for survival, Ava manages to fight off one of the attackers and saves her sister and herself. Zoe is critically injured in the process and falls into a coma. The incident leaves Ava emotionally scarred and traumatized, haunted by the horrors she witnessed. Sixteen years pass, and Ava has become emotionally detached from her life, working as a nurse in a nursing home. Zoe, now an adult, is struggling with her own trauma and her own dark past. Ava, still grieving for her mother, is haunted by visions of the night of the massacre. As Zoe returns to their home to sort through their deceased grandmother's belongings, Ava is forced to confront her dark past. Zoe's arrival at the mansion also awakens the vengeful spirit of Andrea. At this point, Ava begins to experience her own hallucinations and visions of the night of the massacre. Andrea's spirit continues to exert control over Ava, forcing her to confront her emotions and repressed memories. Meanwhile, Zoe begins to uncover dark secrets about the mansion and the events that led to their mother's death. When Zoe delves deeper, she discovers that their grandmother, who lived in the house, was involved in occult practices and that she may have had dealings with dark forces. Zoe and Ava's investigation into their grandmother's death uncovers a sinister web of secrets, rituals, and human sacrifices that took place in the mansion. In a shocking twist, it's revealed that Zoe was also present at the mansion on the night of the massacre and played a key role in fighting off the intruders, although her trauma and amnesia had suppressed these memories. As Ava and Zoe delve deeper into the mystery surrounding their family's dark past, things take a dark and disturbing turn, revealing a tangled web of family history and the true extent of their mother's suffering and ultimate demise. The climax finds Zoe and Ava confronting the vengeful spirit of their mother as well as a figure from their grandmother's dark past. Through a climactic confrontation, the two women come to terms with their traumatic past and, in doing so, find a way to heal. However, this comes at a great cost to themselves and their bond as sisters.
