Plot
G.I. Joe: The Movie, also known as G.I. Joe: The Revenge of Cobra, is a 1987 animated science fiction film produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions, based on the popular G.I. Joe franchise created by Don Levine and Larry Hama. The movie follows the G.I. Joe team as they face off against a powerful, ancient enemy known as Cobra-La, a society of snake-like humanoids who seek to reclaim the earth from the surface-dwellers who drove them underground centuries ago. The film begins with a flashback sequence showcasing the origin story of the Cobra-La. According to legend, the Cobra-La were an advanced and technologically sophisticated society that lived on the surface of the earth thousands of years ago. However, as their civilization reached its peak, they were threatened by the arrival of a group of surface-dwellers, who eventually drove the Cobra-La underground. The once-great society was forced to adapt to their new subterranean environment, leading to a genetic mutation that transformed them into snake-like beings. Fast-forward to the present day, where the G.I. Joe team has just defeated the evil Cobra Commander, who had become a pawn in the larger game of Cobra-La. The Cobra-La society has chosen a new leader in the form of a powerful sorceress named Lady Jaye's doppelganger, 'The Spirit' and 'Kenny', a Cobra-La human who has infiltrated the G.I. Joe team and poses as an ally named a man called "The Spirit", but who is actually a human who has merged with Cobra-La energy after being left to die. The Spirit is the one chosen by Cobra-La, who then sets his sights on the surface world and a new era of Cobra-La domination begins. Meanwhile, the G.I. Joe team is led by Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, and Lady Jaye, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their former leader, Cobra Commander. The team soon discovers that Cobra-La is making a push to take over the world, using its advanced technology and powerful sorcery to bend the forces of nature to their will. As the G.I. Joe team tries to navigate this new threat, they also have to deal with the internal politics of Cobra-La, which is divided between a council of elder Cobra-La who want to take things slow and a more aggressive faction, led by Lady Jaye's doppelganger's, 'The Spirit' and her human form, Kenny, who believes that the time has come for Cobra-La to reclaim the surface world by force. The G.I. Joe team soon finds themselves facing off against the Cobra-La forces in a series of battles that take them from the depths of the earth to the streets of New York City. Along the way, they encounter a range of characters, from the Cobra-La warriors, who are fiercely dedicated to their cause, to the human allies, who are desperate to stop Cobra-La from taking over the world. As the stakes grow higher, the G.I. Joe team must come together to stop the Cobra-La forces and prevent a global catastrophe. The movie culminates in a showdown between Duke and the Cobra-La sorceress, Lady Jaye's doppelganger who is determined to see her people claim the surface world once and for all. In the end, the G.I. Joe team emerges victorious, having saved the world from the threat of Cobra-La. However, the movie ends on a somber note, with the team reflecting on the loss of their friends and the sacrifices that were made during the battle. As the team returns to their headquarters, they know that they will have to remain vigilant, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead in a world filled with the threats of Cobra-La and other enemies. The film's themes of friendship, loyalty, and the importance of standing up against oppression are timeless, and the movie has become a classic in the world of animation, entertaining audiences with its action-packed storyline and memorable characters.
