Guardians of the Galaxy

Plot

In a galaxy torn apart by conflict and oppression, a peculiar young man named Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, finds himself at the center of a multibillion-credit manhunt. Abducted by aliens 26 years ago, Peter's unwavering sense of identity as an Earthling is about to be forcefully adjusted amidst a chaotic universe. This is a world where ruthless tyrants rule the cosmos, exploiting the desperation and fear of those they seek to dominate. Peter's journey begins on the planet Morag, where he inadvertently steals a mysterious, energy-rich artifact known as the Orb. Unbeknownst to him, this powerful relic is coveted by Ronan the Accusher, a ruthless and fanatical Kree warrior who seeks to use its immense power to unleash devastating chaos on the galaxy. The enigmatic Ronan is determined to claim the Orb and bring about an Armageddon according to the ancient Kree prophecy, thereby ushering in a new era of power and order. As Ronan's henchmen relentlessly pursue Peter across the galaxy, he finds himself alone, seeking redemption and purpose in the unforgiving cosmos. Unwilling to confront the uncertain fate ahead, Peter retreats into the depths of his cherished past, comprised of an insatiable passion for old Earth music. His love for 1970s pop and rock music becomes his only solace, and his treasured Walkman is his most prized companion. Meanwhile, a trio of eccentric villains - Yondu Udonta, a blue-skinned outlaw with a specialized crossbow called a Blasterbolt, and the Brothers Raccoon, a sinister and foul-mouthed duo - is also hot on the trail of the Orb. Their actions are driven by a different agenda: Yondu seeks to add valuable credits to his space pirate collection, while the Brothers Raccoon aim to utilize the artifact's power to infiltrate and terrorize key settlements. When Peter's ship, the Milano, is attacked by Ronan's forces, he finds himself face-to-face with Gamora, the last of the Zelari, a legendary warrior-woman, who arrives in an urgent mission to claim the Orb for her former mentor, Thanos. Recognizing that Ronan's plan would inevitably bring devastation to the galaxy, Gamora aligns her interests with Peter's as they prepare for a potential showdown. Eventually, the paths of these disparate adventurers converge on the planet Morag, as they become acutely aware of the stakes and gather momentum in preparation for an epic battle that will ultimately decide the fate of the galaxy. Rocket, a deadly and irrepressible genetically engineered raccoon, and Drax the Destroyer, a rage-filled brute built by Ego, a wise and confident being from an outsider existence with other-beings all with distinct reasons that led Drax to such strong, unconditional desire for revenge, finally join Peter, Gamora, and Yondu in this heroic alliance. On Morag, Peter confronts Ronan, witnessing the gravity of his situation for the first time. Shocked by the discovery of an intimate connection between Ronan and Thanos, Peter comprehends the depth of Ronan's intentions to unleash his malevolent will on the galaxy. After finally discovering the origins of the Orb and its significance in Ronan's intentions, Peter understands that the sinister Accuser's existence was foreordained by the dark thread that connected him to the most dominant presence in the universe, Thanos. Determined to prevent Ronan's catastrophic agenda, the new league of cosmic heroes, imbued with unique personalities and powers, joins Peter in a decisive battle against the brutal Ronan and his formidable lieutenants. Rocket's martial skills and snarky expertise, Gamora's lethal fighting prowess, and Drax's brutish vitality join forces with Peter's humility, resourcefulness, and compassion to secure a rare bond with their fellow companions. In the heart of the climactic showdown, Peter and his friends execute an audacious plan to harness the energy of the Orb and cripple Ronan's formidable technological arsenal.

Aside from Rocket's interwoven backstory flashbacks being well-executed, the main plot doesn't hold a candle to the previous two films. It's still a chaotic mess.

This is Marvel! The best since "Endgame"! You laugh until you cry... The "Guardians" flavor is strong, the goofy humor is off the charts, the laughs are plentiful, and the action is big and exciting. But what truly touches you are the heart-wrenching details: the appearance of a little blue guy that brings applause from the crowd, a character the fans loved so much that they miss; a weird monkey call represents the tenderness of a tough father and some beautiful father-daughter time we never got to see; a simple "yeah" signifies the bond of sisterhood across the multiverse; a nano-tech arm is the legacy of Iron Man; an awkward hug is reserved for family with no blood relation, and a rocket is being picked up...

Guardians of the Galaxy might be getting the boot from the MCU for being too consistently good, and honestly, while I get wanting to explore Rocket's backstory, a limited series would've been enough – we didn't really need another movie bloated with filler. The ending pretty much screams that everyone knows this is the only franchise Marvel has left that's still delivering, so they're gonna milk it for all it's worth.

In *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1* at 22:04, the name Lylla appears. The High Evolutionary gave her robotic limbs. Rocket Raccoon's desire for Bucky's arm in *Avengers: Infinity War* stems from how the robotic arm reminds him of Lylla. And in *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1*, Rocket also wanted the prosthetic limbs of his fellow inmates that reminded him of the rabbit, Flopsy. He even wanted the prosthetic eye from Yondu's Ravagers. This connects to Teefs' cybernetic eyes engineered by the High Evolutionary's experiments. His eyes function unaturally, blinking with machine control. In *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2* at 25:13, there's a picture on the wall of Teefs, suggesting a portrait done before his capture. (*Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2* at 1:27:25...)
