Hidden

Plot

Hidden, directed by Adam Kane, is a 2015 sci-fi thriller film that centers around the desperate actions of a family as they try to survive in a world torn apart by a deadly virus outbreak. The movie takes an unexpected twist on the typical zombie apocalypse narrative, instead focusing on the fear and paranoia that emerge when social structures break down. The story begins with Will and Allison, a middle-class family who live in the suburbs with their two teenage children, Benny and Abby. As the outbreak begins to spread rapidly across the country, Will takes charge, trying to prepare his family for the impending disaster. In an attempt to keep his family safe, Will stocks up on essential supplies, builds a fallout shelter in their home, and tries to make sure they have enough food and water to last for months. However, as the outbreak worsens, the family is forced to take refuge in their fall-out shelter. Initially, they believe that once they are inside, they will be safe from the outside world. However, as days turn into weeks, Will, Allison, and their children begin to experience isolation from the rest of the world. Without any news or communication from the outside world, the family starts to feel disconnected from reality, which eventually leads to paranoia and distrust. In their confined space, tensions start to rise as the couple's differences begin to surface. Will is more focused on keeping their family safe, while Allison expresses her feelings of desperation and despair. The isolation in the bunker heightens their personal issues and causes conflicts to escalate. This leads to some intense confrontations between the two parents and ultimately puts their children in an even more precarious situation. As they try to maintain their sanity in the harsh, claustrophobic environment, new problems begin to arise. The water supply dwindles, and they have to start rationing their food. They also have to deal with a malfunctioning shelter that poses a significant threat to their survival. To make matters worse, the radio starts picking up strange broadcasts from the outside world, making it increasingly apparent that they may not be alone in the shelter. The most disturbing realization for the family comes when Benny, the young son, starts experiencing terrifying and unexplained events in the shelter. He hears strange noises and feels a presence lurking in the darkness. The family initially thinks it's their imaginations or the pressure of living in confinement. However, as the events escalate, they begin to suspect that they may not be alone in the shelter. The possibility that someone or something may be hiding in the bunker with them creates a sense of perpetual anxiety, and the atmosphere inside the home turns increasingly dark. The climax of the film reveals the unthinkable: Will, the protective father, has been hiding a dark secret. In a desperate attempt to keep his family safe, Will had intentionally trapped his wife and children with him. However, unbeknownst to his family, Will himself is infected with a deadly virus, and in his paranoid state, he had locked his family in the shelter to keep them from potentially exposing themselves to the outside world. The conclusion leaves a lasting impression on the audience. The family is stuck in the shelter, with Will's intentions slowly revealing themselves as a desperate and misguided attempt to save his loved ones. His selflessness turns into a twisted form of love, where he believes he is protecting them by keeping them confined. The ending raises more questions than it answers, leaving the audience to contemplate the true nature of love and protection. The movie's gripping plot leaves viewers questioning the lengths to which people will go to ensure their loved ones' safety. The tension, suspense, and the claustrophobic atmosphere of the shelter make Hidden a gripping sci-fi thriller that raises essential questions about human behavior and the consequences of desperation.

In *Hidden*, a wealthy heiress and cellist uses her house and social standing to trap a handsome, talented man, while also imprisoning a woman with her love and a hidden space. The film portrays two relationships, one in the open and one concealed. Bold and poignant, it's filled with both desire and sorrow. Park Ji-hyun delivers an outstanding performance, shining whether adorned innocently in a student uniform or exuding a playful charm, whether interacting with men or women, clothed or unclothed. She embodies a captivating mix of innocence and allure.

Trading out hetero nudity for same-sex nudity would earn this my highest recommendation.
