Plot

In the gritty, rain-soaked streets of London, a former special forces operative, Jude, is on the run. Haunted by his past and struggling to cope with the trauma he experienced, Jude finds himself homeless, forced to rely on the city's charity system to survive. However, his life takes a drastic turn when he's caught and brought before a military court martial, accused of a crime he didn't commit, or so it seems. After being found guilty, Jude is given a heavy sentence, setting him on a collision course with the law. With his options dwindling, Jude turns to a familiar face in the city's seedy underworld – his old acquaintance, Charlie. Jude's decision to trust Charlie, a small-time crook with connections, proves to be a fateful one. While on the run, Jude stumbles upon an opportunity, one that would change the course of his life forever. He encounters a dying man, Eddie, on the verge of being mugged by a group of thugs. As he watches Eddie succumb to his injuries, Jude realises that this chance encounter can provide him with a new identity, a fresh start. Eddie, it turns out, had been living a secret life, one shrouded in mystery. With no one to claim his body, Jude sees an opportunity to take on Eddie's identity, allowing him to blend into the shadows and evade the authorities. Under the guise of being Eddie, Jude begins to navigate the complex web of London's underworld, forming alliances with local crime lords and using his skills to take down his enemies. As Jude's transformation into the new Eddie takes hold, the city begins to notice a strange phenomenon – a phantom figure is emerging, targeting those responsible for the worst crimes. With each subsequent attack, the reputation of the shadowy avenger grows, and the fear of being targeted by this mysterious figure spreads throughout the underworld. The media labels this avenging angel as "Hummingbird," a moniker derived from his ability to strike quickly and strike hard, like the hummingbird's rapid wing movements. The public is both fascinated and intimidated by this enigmatic figure, who seems to embody the perfect blend of justice and revenge. Meanwhile, Jude's dual lives become increasingly intertwined. As he navigates his new identity as Eddie, he must also contend with his own troubled past, the traumas that continue to haunt him, and the lingering feeling of shame that threatens to consume him. Throughout his journey, Jude's character is revealed in fits and starts, giving the audience a glimpse into the psychological complexities of this complex character. The film expertly weaves together flashbacks of Jude's military days, showcasing his exceptional skills as a special forces operative and his descent into a life of chaos and desperation. Jude's relationships with the people around him are also a defining aspect of the film. His bond with Charlie, in particular, is a delicate balance of loyalty and trust, as Charlie becomes increasingly entangled in Jude's secret life. Meanwhile, Jude's interactions with the enigmatic and alluring Sarah, a local artist with a deep understanding of the city's underworld, serve as a catalyst for his introspection and self-discovery. As the film hurtles towards its climax, Jude's dual lives converge in a dramatic confrontation with the forces of justice. In a tense showdown, Jude must confront the consequences of his actions as Hummingbird, facing off against the authorities and his own demons. Ultimately, the film presents a nuanced exploration of identity, loyalty, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. Through Jude's journey, we see a man struggling to find redemption in the face of his troubled past, and in the process, discovering a new sense of purpose as Hummingbird. As the credits roll, we are left to ponder the fate of this complex, enigmatic figure – has Jude finally found a way to reconcile his past and present, or has he merely created a new mask to hide behind? The film leaves us with a sense of ambiguity, a nod to the city's enduring mystery, and the ever-present question: what lies beneath the surface of this labyrinthine metropolis, where the rain-soaked streets and crumbling buildings hide secrets and stories yet untold.

Watched as part of the "Focus on Future" program at the Beijing Film Festival's Film Academy. A coming-of-age story about a 13 or 14-year-old middle school girl. The script is incredibly realistic and dense; "every person is a world unto themselves.” The adolescent girl encounters a complex and rich tapestry of life, the human experience, and all its associated problems. This debut demonstrates remarkable maturity and talent from the writer and director.

Hummingbird would be great if it had half the substance of "Crossing the Border - Spring Departures."

With Kim Il-sung's death, some feared war between North and South Korea, while others worried about the scars left by tumors. The collapse of the Seongsu Bridge meant some were late and escaped the disaster, while others said their farewells earlier than expected due to broken promises. A junior's crush only lasted a semester, and a boy's compliments were for everyone. Gaze upon my mother's torn stockings and the gauze on my father's arm, I became acquainted with the world, endured violence. When will it be my turn to shine? Youth is about knocking on the wrong door on the wrong floor, waiting for the people one missed at the wrong time.
