Plot

Jawan is a 2023 Indian action thriller film written and directed by Atlee, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the title role. The movie delves into the complex and tumultuous life of a prison warden named Ali Kabir, played by Shah Rukh Khan, who finds solace in avenging his personal tragedy. The story begins with a prologue that showcases a pivotal moment in Ali's life. We see a younger Ali, radiating joy and happiness while taking a simple yet profound oath with his friend Azmat, played by Logan Lerman. Though Azmat flees to the United States to secure a better life, Ali promises to be there for him, ensuring he doesn't forget his commitments. Years pass, and Ali earns a decent education, getting awarded the second-highest degree of honor - India's coveted Indian Police Service (IPS) officer designation. Becoming a meticulous yet hot-headed prison warden, Ali's unrelenting pursuit of justice never fades, contrasting and eventually taking a darker and more personal turn. When India's infamous underworld figure, Munna Durani, is imprisoned under Ali's custody, Ali seizes his chance. However, his intentions aren't aligned perfectly with the right motivations as he plots intricate revenge against the corrupt prison officials and forces - the individuals directly responsible for his brother's cruel and unwanted demise. It's clear that by far the root of Ali Kabir's drastic, ambitious choices was his unremitting sorrow over his brother's death. The realization that corruption prevails is what further serves as fuel for this ever-hungrier warden, which consequently gives rise to alliances with offenders such as Munna's former notorious henchmen in order to expose corruption in a daring series of planned heists. Azmat's family, who Ali now cares and truly hopes to provide for, ultimately become the central point of focus for his vengeance quest. Even though he manipulates people who have been put behind bars for years for an attempt to level the score and get justice, Ali's relentless personal crusade against these infamous corruptants never loses all sense of purpose. It begins to cross boundaries that blurs very clearly good and bad out of line in anticipation of such vigilant and ambitious quests of its own. Just as his grand scheme slowly but very efficiently gains altitude - with nothing but complete exposure always on his pursuit for its targets and unearthing secrets no one knows - Ali Kabir finds the opportunity he had always dreaded yet always feared - an unexpected face-to-face confrontation with his long-lost best friend, Azmat. Realistically brought to light when Ali Kabir's obsession to make memories of days gone by a promise is momentarily kept by putting a heart to two people linked closely and extremely special, time when two friends who've somehow built powerful trust so far long back cannot escape meeting in person. Filled with an unmistakable air of wonder, awe, and guilt, Ali Kabir is forced to experience all of this - it unravels so delicately as to reveal absolute irony though emotions abound so grandly in situations given these unmissed events that leave both of them moved beyond imagination.
