Plot

In 1943, the Pacific War is in full swing, with Japan facing its greatest challenges yet. However, for the young ladies at Okinawa Normal School, the war remains a distant threat, far removed from their daily lives. Kazuko and her friends are too busy with their school's annual sports festival, laughing, playing games, and showcasing their athleticism in various sports competitions. The event is a grand celebration of friendship and camaraderie, with an air of carefree youthful energy that pervades the atmosphere. As the day unfolds, the focus is on the students, with the teachers serving as coaches and supporters in the background. The sports festival is a showcase of their skills and determination, as the young women compete in various events, including track and field, basketball, and badminton. The excitement and joy of the day are palpable, and the sense of solidarity and shared purpose among the participants is evident. However, this peaceful atmosphere is short-lived. The invasion of Okinawa by the United States military during 'Operation Iceberg', a year after the events of the sports festival, will irrevocably change the lives of Kazuko and her friends. As the Japanese military becomes increasingly aware of the looming threat, the once idyllic scene at the school is slowly disrupted. The impending invasion, known to the Japanese as 'Operation Ugan' and to the Allies as 'Operation Iceberg', is a massive amphibious assault planned by the US military to capture the strategic Ryukyu Island, which will serve as an important stepping stone for a potential invasion of Japan. As news of the invasion draws closer, the atmosphere at Okinawa Normal School begins to shift, and the once carefree students are now consumed by fear, anxiety, and a growing sense of urgency. The girls begin to take on more responsibilities, assuming roles as part of the Girl's Corps, an all-female unit tasked with maintaining public morale and contributing to the war effort. This organization, which had been a relatively minor aspect of their lives before, now becomes their raison d'être, as they strive to support their country and defend their homeland. As the days count down to the invasion, the once idyllic landscape of Okinawa is ravaged by the sounds of war, as Japanese troops prepare for combat, and the island bracing for the impending arrival of the Allied forces. Kazuko and her fellow students find themselves at the epicenter of this maelstrom, struggling to balance the demands of the war with their desire to maintain a semblance of normalcy. The impending doom that threatens Okinawa is compounded by the harsh realities of the invasion, which bring forth intense human suffering, devastating losses, and irreparable damage to the once tranquil island. The once peaceful scenes of school life are now overshadowed by the brutal scenes of war, as the island descends into chaos, and Kazuko and her friends are pushed to their limits in their efforts to cope with the unfolding disaster. Ultimately, the lives of Kazuko and her friends are forever changed as they confront the harsh realities of war, loss, and sacrifice. As the island teeters on the brink of collapse, the once idyllic world of the Okinawa Normal School is forever shattered, leaving in its wake a legacy of pain, loss, and remembrance that serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.
