Sleepers, a gripping drama film directed by Barry Levinson, revolves around the tumultuous lives of four boys, Jonathan 'Snap' Murphy (Justin Tierney), Tom Witzky (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Bobby Kovacski (Vladamir G'danski), and John Sherman (Billy Milner), who, during their time at the Hell's Kitchen Youth Detention Center, were brutally subjected to inhumane treatment and molestation by their caretakers and authority figures. The pivotal event in the lives of these boys takes place on Christmas Day several years prior to the main timeline, where one of their caretakers, a depraved and cunning correctional officer, named Jerry 'Smiler' Giscombe (Brad Pitt), engages in a most heinous and reprehensible crime. Smiler takes Tom, Bobby, and Jonathan to a secluded location where he proceeds to anally rape Tom, while Jonathan witnesses the ordeal. Meanwhile, John, a sensitive and soft-spoken boy, is subjected to inhumane beatings and mental torment at the hands of another caretaker. Smiler, driven by sadistic and deviant tendencies, manipulates and demoralizes the boys, using their vulnerability and desperation to his advantage. The scene cuts to the present, where the grown boys, having long moved on and built new lives for themselves, have grown into intelligent and courageous men.
