Patlabor: The Movie

Plot

Set in an alternate universe in 1999, 'Patlabor: The Movie,' directed by Fumihiko Takayama, delves into the intersection of technology and society, raising essential questions regarding the responsibility of innovation and the potential consequences of technological advancements. The film commences by showcasing a typical day in modern Tokyo, with a focus on the integration of advanced robots into daily life, commonly referred to as " labors." These labors aid in various industries such as transportation, construction, and security, rendering human labor more efficient and productive. Against this backdrop, a sudden and mysterious robot-related incident unfolds: one of the labors, in use at a harbor construction site, suddenly turns out to be unmanned and runs amok, resulting in a devastating explosion. An on-board computer, the Central Nervous System, or CNS, for short, takes full control and initiates the attack. The series of such incidents prompts an investigation by the 2nd Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, an elite task force that specializes in addressing technological crimes. At the helm of the task force is Chief Matsuda, who quickly recognizes the gravity of the situation and realizes the labors may pose serious threats to public safety. Under his leadership, the task force assembles a team consisting of various experts, including detectives and engineers skilled in handling and operating the labors. However, things become further complicated with the appearance of an unknown party known as 'Noah' and a subsequent mysterious occurrence in which the suicide of a programmer named Kenichi Kuruma, a key developer of a specific software used in many labors, surfaces. The police investigation reveals that this software, known as the "No Return Mode," appears to have been the primary reason for the sudden malfunction of the labors. A young detective and lab tech named Goro Akechi, who has expertise in operating labors, plays a crucial role in unraveling the enigma behind the series of labors' malfunctions. As Goro becomes deeply entangled in the investigation, he discovers some crucial information. The No Return Mode program is designed so that the only way to shut down a labors operating under this mode is to physically destroy the labor itself or reboot the central main computer system. Moreover, this program is hidden deep within the labor's CNS, a component inaccessible to human operators. Akechi is eventually able to uncover evidence that the 'No Return Mode' was in fact a prototype software created by Kuruma, and this software was deliberately implanted into thousands of industrial robots across Tokyo by an unknown figure. Akechi soon suspects that a rogue programmer might be using this prototype to bring about chaos and destruction in the city through the 'No Return Mode.' This theory gains validity as the series of malfunctions continue.
