Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!

Plot

Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! is the first film in the Pokémon franchise's animated movie series. Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, the movie takes viewers on a journey with a young and passionate Pokémon trainer, Ash Ketchum. The film begins with a flashback of Ash's childhood, showcasing the moment his mother presents him with his very first Pokémon, an Electric-type Pikachu. As Ash's mother sends him off to Professor Oak's laboratory to receive his very first Pokémon, he's reminded of the importance of his mother's words: "the world of Pokémon is a wonderful place." However, the flashback is quickly interrupted, and the audience finds themselves transported to the present, where Ash receives a phone call from Professor Oak. Professor Oak informs Ash that it's late, and the three starter Pokémon he had intended to give to him have already been taken by other trainers. However, Oak has one last Pokémon to share with Ash, and it's none other than Pikachu, an Electric-type Pokémon with a fiery personality to match its Electric-type moves. Ash is overjoyed at the prospect of receiving Pikachu, despite Professor Oak mentioning that it's the only Pokémon left from the batch, and that it can be a handful. As Ash and Pikachu set off on their journey, they're immediately faced with the reality of traveling through the Kanto region, filled with wild Pokémon, fierce battles, and new friendships. Ash and Pikachu's relationship is put to the test as Pikachu consistently refuses to get inside a Poké Ball, and Ash must rely on his quick thinking and agility to safely handle Pikachu. Their first stop is the Viridian City, where Ash encounters a young girl named Delia, a former friend. Delia is initially hesitant to meet Ash due to their falling apart over several years. However, with a heart-to-heart conversation, Ash is able to reconnect with his old friend, forming a new bond and solidifying the significance of friendships throughout the journey. While visiting the Pokémon Center, Ash meets Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny, familiar faces within the Pokémon world. As the journey progresses, Ash and Pikachu come across various Pokémon battles, showcasing Ash's determination and Pikachu's unwavering friendship. In another pivotal moment, Ash receives a mysterious Pokémon magazine, which sparks his curiosity about a legendary Pokémon known as Mew, said to be capable of transforming into any other Pokémon. Ash becomes fixated on finding Mew, believing it might be the perfect Pokémon for a true Pokémon master. Throughout the film, Ash and Pikachu navigate the Kanto region, battling Gym Leaders, facing numerous obstacles, and deepening their bond. As the stakes grow higher, Pikachu becomes an essential part of the team, protecting Ash from harm and showcasing its unwavering loyalty. However, when the movie nears its conclusion, it becomes apparent that the real focus has shifted from Ash's journey as the main protagonist to his mother's unwavering love and the pivotal role it plays in his early life. The film's resolution reveals the true essence of Ash's mother's wisdom and love. As Ash realizes his mother's passing away, he understands that the journey itself was never about catching or battling Pokémon; it was about the love and the bond that grew between him and his Pokémon, in particular, Pikachu. Ash comes to realize his true potential as a Pokémon trainer and the importance of friendship and determination. The film wraps up with Ash reflecting on the wisdom his mother imparted to him at the very beginning of the movie - "if you can't catch Pokémon, don't feel sad - it means you're already with them." The final shot is of Ash proudly holding Pikachu's hand, showcasing the unbreakable bond between the two, and the enduring spirit of the Pokémon franchise.
