Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Plot

In the post-apocalyptic town of Raccoon City, a sense of desolation fills the air as the crumbling buildings and littered streets bear witness to the catastrophic collapse of the once-thriving industrial giant, Umbrella Corporation. Founded by James Marcus and Edward Ashford, the company had long been at the forefront of cutting-edge biotechnology, lavishly investing in their research and development centers across the United States. Among the townspeople, there's a growing unease, fueled by the rumor mill churning out whispers of a catastrophic exodus. But for the citizens of Raccoon City, this theory seems impossible - their world, once thriving, now slowly disintegrating beneath their feet. That's when the anomaly begins: normal people descending into cannibalistic frenzies, unleashing a bloodbath of chaos upon the stricken population. It quickly becomes evident that the ground beneath their feet is cracking open, unleashing an unholy terror from the seemingly abandoned depths below. Narratively shifting between an eerie recollection of the city's past grandeur and a more grounded, present-day realist tone, the main characters offer the narrative an unexpected boost by navigating this abyssal fall of the town they once knew and protected. The movie starts on a quiet, dark note, setting the stage for an ominous sense of foreboding throughout. Leigh Charleson's and Chris Redfield's connections thread their way through the town. Chris, played by Avan Jogia, develops his own mysterious intentions. Later in the narrative, his ambitions bring him into the same vicinity as Beverly, played powerfully by Ella Balinska - all within the depths of the perished city; this is where real friendship and the real nightmare truly commenced. An unlikely fusion of nostalgia and terror underscores the early scenes, giving off this strange ambiance from what Umbrella established and accomplished. By introducing small enclaves of hope amidst the catastrophe and further sub-setting smaller tales against a collapsing landscape, the film teases its dramatic, emotional significance by cleverly intermingling characters while showcasing a deep sense of despair engulfing them. Chris delves further into a sinister narrative in his exploration of abandoned facilities. These abandoned spaces continue blurring the line between past and present through eerie settings as the characters work against the clock, piecing together the remnants of their city and further unraveling the mysteries behind the true cause of the town's catastrophic downfall. Unremitting horrors converge when Chris, Alice's and Heather's acquaintance, unwittingly plunges the depth of its dreadful past. The night brings up its long-anticipated, unforgiving storms, driving home an ever-constricting sense of desperation and clamping down what remaining light there is with foreboding thunder and lightning, offering itself in sync with a series of devastating revelations. Chris forces himself into the midst of Raccoon’s unrelenting dark shadows as an ultimate enemy continues spreading terror further from Raccoon's decaying heart.
