Plot

Safety is a 2020 American biographical drama film directed by Reginald Hudlin, starring Jay Reeves and Corbin Reid. The movie is inspired by the true story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, a young man who took on the extraordinary challenge of raising his younger brother on campus while also balancing his college football career. The movie opens with an introduction to Ray-Ray McElrathbey, a college freshman at Clemson University, where he has been given a chance to play football. As the younger brother of a veteran, Ray-Ray's home life is marked by instability due to his parents' constant deployment and struggles with the military life. His parents, though loving and well-intentioned, are often absent, and Ray-Ray takes on the responsibility of raising his 6-year-old brother, Fahmarr, who is left behind by himself for extended periods of time. Ray-Ray's decision to keep Fahmarr with him on campus is met with some skepticism by the university's administrators, but he convinces them to allow him to take care of his brother due to the unstable circumstances at home. Fahmarr becomes the youngest student at Clemson University, and the brothers grow closer as they navigate their new life together. Despite the challenges they face, Ray-Ray's football career takes off, and he becomes a valuable member of the team. Fahmarr, too, thrives in his new environment, quickly becoming a part of the university community. However, as the brothers' lives become more public, they face scrutiny from the press, fans, and even some of their teammates, who do not understand why Fahmarr is living on campus. As Ray-Ray and Fahmarr navigate their new reality, they also face challenges on a personal level. Fahmarr struggles to adapt to the demands of living on campus, and Ray-Ray begins to doubt his ability to care for his brother. The pressure from school, football, and the media takes its toll on Ray-Ray, and he starts to feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities that come with caring for Fahmarr. Meanwhile, Ray-Ray's football career also becomes a source of tension between the brothers. As Ray-Ray's game time increases, Fahmarr begins to feel left out and jealous of the attention his brother receives. The brothers' relationship grows strained, and they begin to question whether they can really make this unconventional arrangement work. Despite the challenges they face, Ray-Ray and Fahmarr also experience moments of joy and connection. Fahmarr becomes close to some of the university's professors and staff, who take him under their wing and provide him with a sense of stability and support that he had previously lacked. As the semester draws to a close, Ray-Ray and Fahmarr face a series of challenges that test their bond and their resolve. A crisis at home forces them to confront the reality of their situation and the sacrifices they have made for each other. However, even as they face uncertainty and adversity, the brothers remain committed to one another and determined to find a way to make their unconventional arrangement work. In the end, Safety is a movie about the power of love, family, and resilience in the face of adversity. Through the story of Ray-Ray and Fahmarr, the film shows how two brothers, with the support of their university community, can overcome even the most daunting challenges and find a way to thrive together.
