Saw IV

Plot
Saw IV begins with news of John Kramer, also known as Jigsaw, having died in a previous installment of the series, Saw III. However, a hidden piece of Jigsaw's brain, preserved in oil and stored in a glass vial, allows his last game to continue with him not being present on-site. Chief Detective Eric Matthews discovers that Jigsaw had been testing him in the previous installment by making him feel as though he was involved in the game, however this was actually a test all along to see how much he cared about his trapped son, Daniel Matthews. Eric Matthews has been experiencing a series of painful flashbacks from an accident in which he crushed his own son's fingers, emphasizing just how twisted and gruesome his involvement was in Jigsaw's final game. In the first key act of Saw IV, a young woman named Lindsey feels like her life's problems have come to an end. Given her desperate situation, and with her relationships seemingly hopelessly beyond repair, it turns out that Lindsey killed herself accidentally, leading her to be placed into one of Jigsaw's deadly traps. Eric Matthews and the FBI team quickly ascertain that the latest deadly game is not Jigsaw but the next test mastermind, simply referred to as 'Jigsaw's Apprentice.' As Detective Matthews investigates, he reveals more about the life of Daniel, now a recovering addict and barely keeping it together. Being forced into Jigsaw's latest game, Matthews decides he will do everything in his power to save Daniel from his 'twin' death, hoping it would rid of his trauma and past guilt. Daniel Matthews, unwittingly chosen for this fatal opportunity, progresses deeper into Jigsaw's game through a twisted series of clues, designed to evaluate both psychological behavior as well as his instinct, while Detective Matthews is pitted against another part of the deadly game: a series of hospital patients connected to a woman only referred to as "Addison Flynn." This brings Detective Matthews to discover his very own painful memories and retribution of seeking redemption before time runs out for him to confront Jigsaw's Apprentice and rescue Daniel. In investigating the hospital cases, Detective Matthews gets to uncover several other gruesome scenes where two other characters experienced the hideous torture of another of Jigsaw's Apprentice's. By contrast, these scenes allude to why Chief Jigsaw, presumably having initiated them years prior, sent his young followers off with these apprentices. Rigg, an old friend of Matthews, who appeared in Saw III is introduced as a key element leading the way towards exposing the hidden story behind the game. As the plot progresses further, to make it more complicated the motives behind each character becomes multilayered and they face extreme psychological distress which includes, dismemberment and gruesome consequences, Rigg pushes Detective Matthews further into this twisted maze of deceptions to finally uncover the mystery behind Jigsaw's latest, even more complex games. The closing scene makes one begin to wonder about where and who Jigsaw left this power to, and what the future truly looks like as another of Jigsaw's followers – Amanda Young, an older one of Jigsaw's protégées - follows the twisted games and provides the viewer a glimpse into a dark future.

Saw IV serves as a completion of the previous storylines, once again playing with temporal tricks, interweaving the timeline. One part points to the past, the formation of Saw, and the other to the future, the selection of an heir. However, the overall dialogue and design feel somewhat uninspired, as if the creative well is running dry. Saw has undoubtedly become a serial. Of course, the autopsy scene at the beginning is still quite good.

Saw IV supplements the first three films, explaining why the inserted police officers ultimately met their demise, and reiterating the series' core themes. Through the words of Jigsaw's ex-wife, the film chronicles Jigsaw's transformation after experiencing the pain of losing his child, surviving a miraculous car accident, and his cancer diagnosis. It delves into the motives behind his elaborate games, designed to warn those who squander their lives to cherish their existence. 7.8
