Plot

Side Effects is a 2013 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Steven Soderbergh. The movie stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Vinessa Shaw. The story revolves around Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), a successful and ambitious psychologist who has been married to Martin (Channing Tatum) for three years. Emily's life is turned upside down when Martin is sentenced to six months in prison for insider trading. This new reality forces Emily to confront her own anxiety, fear, and sense of inadequacy. Desperate to cope with her emotions and the impending separation from her husband, Emily turns to her psychiatrist, Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), for help. However, she is already under the care of her colleague, Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Jonathan, who is a highly intelligent and experienced doctor, prescribes Emily the new antidepressant Ablixa, a highly potent and fast-acting medication. Emily is eager to use Ablixa as a means of stabilizing her emotional state and coping with the stress of Martin's incarceration. At first, the medication seems to be working well, and Emily's mental health appears to be improving. However, as the weeks pass, Emily becomes increasingly dependent on the medication. She begins to experience side effects such as an intense libido, which ultimately leads her to commit a series of erratic and violent outbursts. As Emily's behavior becomes more and more erratic, Jonathan starts to notice that his patient is not responding well to the medication. He becomes increasingly concerned about the side effects and decides to take a closer look at Emily's medical history. Jonathan discovers that Emily was previously suffering from severe anxiety and depression, and Ablixa had been recalled from the market due to cases of users becoming violent and aggressive. Despite his growing concerns, Jonathan decides to keep prescribing the medication to Emily, believing that the benefits outweigh the risks. As Emily's behavior deteriorates further, Jonathan's colleague Victoria starts to notice the change in her and becomes increasingly suspicious of Jonathan's motives. Meanwhile, Emily's marriage to Martin is on the verge of collapse. Martin, who is struggling to cope with his prison sentence, becomes distant and detached from Emily. Their relationship begins to fray, and Emily becomes increasingly isolated and desperate. As the truth about Ablixa and its side effects begins to surface, Emily's world starts to unravel. Her mental health deteriorates further, and her behavior becomes more and more erratic. Victoria, who has been observing Emily's case closely, discovers a dark secret about Jonathan's past that raises questions about his motives and the true purpose of prescribing Ablixa to Emily. The movie's climax unfolds as Emily's behavior becomes increasingly violent, and Jonathan's past is revealed. It is revealed that Jonathan was involved in the clinical trials of Ablixa, and his knowledge of the medication's side effects had led him to prescribe it to Emily in secret. The movie's final confrontation reveals that Jonathan's true intention was to gain funding for his research, using Emily as a test subject without her knowledge or consent. The movie ends with Emily's fate uncertain, as she is taken away by paramedics after a violent outburst. Victoria, who has discovered the truth about Jonathan's past, is left to wonder about the ethics of the medical profession and the consequences of playing with fire when it comes to human lives.
