Plot

Sijjin 8, a Turkish horror film directed by Ütkü Aksakallı, weaves a spine-chilling tale of demonic possession and family devastation. The story revolves around a man, Aziz (played by Erdinç Abaci), who, in a bid to care for his aging mother, brings her into his home with the intention of helping her in her golden years. Aziz's decision to bring his mother, Nur (played by Nurperm Sultan) into his home sets off a chain of eerie and unsettling events, which gradually expose the dark secrets of the family's past. The elderly woman, with her frail and ailing body, appears to be the embodiment of a malevolent spirit, slowly exerting an unnatural influence on her family members. As the story progresses, strange occurrences escalate in the household. Aziz's children begin to behave erratically and with malevolent intent, while his wife struggles to cope with the inexplicable happenings. The once peaceful and tranquil home transforms into a war zone, with each member fighting their own battles against the evil entity. Unbeknownst to Nur, she was previously involved in a satanic cult in her younger years, and her dark past comes back to haunt her. As the spirit within her grows in power, it feeds on the family's suffering, sowing discord and division among the members. The film's narrative is structured as a slow-burning, atmospheric descent into madness and chaos. With every passing scene, the line between reality and the supernatural becomes increasingly blurred. The camera's use of shadowy lighting and the creaking of wooden floorboards creates an unsettling tension, mirroring the family's inner turmoil. Meanwhile, Nur's actions and behaviors become more and more erratic. Her once fragile state is slowly replaced by an unnerving transformation, which raises the question of whether she is indeed possessed by a demon or merely suffering from the weight of her past. As time progresses, the once loving mother becomes an embodiment of evil, exacting an unholy revenge on her own family. With its unflinching depiction of family trauma and the supernatural, Sijjin 8 crafts a haunting and deeply unsettling film experience. Through its carefully crafted narrative and the exceptional performances from its cast, the movie effectively conveys the notion that the greatest horrors often reside within our own homes. By peeling back the layers of human relationships and revealing the dark secrets we hide from the world, Sijjin 8 becomes a chilling reminder that, sometimes, the things we fear most are the ones closest to us.
