Plot

In the gripping psychological thriller Stay, psychiatrist Sam Foster (played by Ewan McGregor) finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and despair when his new patient, Henry Letham (played by Ryan Gosling), presents a disturbing scenario. Henry claims to be suicidal, and his erratic behavior raises red flags for Sam, who has been observing him closely in an attempt to diagnose his condition. As the story unfolds, Sam's fixation on Henry intensifies, leading him to dig deeper into the young man's troubled past. He discovers that Henry's parents, also deceased, had a troubled history of their own, with whispers of an abusive relationship and the mother's erratic behavior being highlighted. In search of more information, Sam tracks down Henry's prior therapist, Dr. Banks (played by Robert Carlyle), who seems reluctant to engage in conversation about Henry's case. Sam also tries to connect with Henry's mother, Lillian, but her responses only seem to fuel the mystery surrounding her son's behavior. However, as Sam investigates further, the lines between reality and fact begin to blur, and the psychiatrist finds himself questioning his own perceptions. The film raises questions about the reliability of witness statements, the instability of memory, and the fluidity of truth. As Henry continues to unravel, Sam becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding the roots of his patient's despair. But the more he learns, the more he realizes how much he doesn't know. Henry's claims of murdering his parents, though initially dismissed as a ruse, begin to take on a disturbing weight. The film becomes a disorienting odyssey, where the truth of Henry's past, and the motivations of his mother, slowly unravel. Henry's cryptic clues start to point to a shocking connection between his mother, Lillian, and the tragic events of his life. Lillian seems evasive about her past but reveals a hint of instability and vulnerability, hinting at how the dynamics in her relationship with her son might have been warped in the aftermath of the deaths of Henry's father. As the clock ticks, Sam becomes desperate to prevent Henry's self-inflicted harm. With his mental faculties increasingly destabilized, Sam starts seeing a pattern in Henry's behavior that he's convinced will allow him to intercept his patient's potential attempt on his life. Racing against time, Sam sets out to prevent a tragedy, driven by an urgent need to connect the seemingly disparate elements of Henry's life.
