Melanie Carmichael is a successful New York fashion designer who has seemingly left her small-town Alabama roots far behind. She has built a life filled with luxury, style, and prestige, complete with an engagement to Andrew Hanning - New York's most eligible bachelor and a darling of high society. On the surface, it appears that Melanie has finally achieved the perfection she had always longed for as a young woman in the South. However, Melanie's past is more complicated than her polished facade would suggest. Unbeknownst to Andrew, Melanie was actually married to a charming but rough-around-the-edges Alabama native named Jake Perry back in their high school days. The marriage was little more than a reckless, youthful mistake, but for reasons that are as much about convenience as they are about love, Melanie and Jake never actually divorced. When Andrew discovers Melanie's marriage to Jake, he is understandably furious, and Melanie is faced with a choice: marry the man of her dreams and risk losing everything she has worked for, or go back to Alabama and confront her unfinished business with Jake. The movie ends with Melanie standing in front of the church, ready to marry Jake in a joyful celebration of love and second chances.
