The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower

Plot

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, The Dark Tower is a 2017 science fantasy film directed by Nikolaj Arcel, based on the popular novel series of the same name by Stephen King. The movie attempts to bridge the gap between King's epic fantasy series and a more universal audience, adapting the first book in the series, The Gunslinger. The story centers around Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), an orphaned young boy haunted by vivid and disturbing visions of a labyrinthine world he can't quite recall. As the narrative unfolds, we learn that Jake is being pursued by a demonic figure known as the Man in Black (Mads Mikkelsen), who is taking on many forms, often appearing as a grizzled gunslinger from the alternate world. The opening scene sets the tone for the film, as we witness Jake's desperate attempt to escape his pursuers and somehow communicate with the world he's trying to remember. It's here that we're introduced to Walter O'Dim, the Man in Black, also known as Walter Padick; and to Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), a stoic and enigmatic gunslinger known as the 'last gunslinger,' whose lifelong quest is to reach the mystical Dark Tower. As the story progresses, Roland appears in Mid-World, a troubled world created by the demonic forces. Jake and Roland's individual pasts become intertwined, as a recurring vision of Jake is revealed to Roland's flashbacks. It becomes evident that their worlds start to intermingle and clash. Roland is driven by a resolute desire to recover his childhood love, Susan Delgado (played by Emily Blunt in the film, though her character is more crucial in the book), to the extent that he becomes fixated on the Tower. He is joined in this quest by Jake, who possesses abilities he cannot understand, allowing him to traverse multiple worlds at will. Upon approaching the ruins of New York, they are revealed to be in the Old World (our Earth), also the Old Timers' world, destroyed and rebuilt infinite times due to the fabric of reality being altered. In this place, the presence of Jake is known and is the reason the universe struggles to reach its 114th world because his existence starts by cracking the fabric and thus begins the end of the sequence. Upon establishing the setting of the story, Roland perceives that Jake's presence and perceptions of the Tower brings forth profound repercussions on their reality. Jake and Roland will have to join forces and work cooperatively to evade their relentless enemies while protecting Jake from a powerful shapeshifter. Dr. Edwin (Bruce Spence), also one of the group pursuing them, will become aware of a shared purpose withROLAND CHAMBERS in this period to connect and shield, a shared resolution to safeguard the sequence from other characters' perceptions. This common goal has no bearing upon the last stand that finds Jake in the very heart of the reality fractures. As visions and prophecies begin to blend with reality, Roland starts grasping the universe-manipulating power inside the Dark Tower through Jake's assistance. Alongside traversing alternate worlds, protecting it from a manipulative mastermind, they must confront age-old knowledge to determine what lies beyond life's finite line. Ultimately, it is only Roland who seems certain about what awaits them; 'these days,' 'always,' and 'if there's a name.' In their relentless searches, Jake is learning what one voice comes with – becoming the one who needs a 'tower guardian.'
