Plot

In a world where humans communicate solely through emojis, the bustling city of Textopolis is home to a vast array of emojis, each with their own unique purpose. Among them is Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, played by T.J. Miller, who possesses a variety of emotions - happiness, sadness, anger, and more - despite his designated purpose as a "basic" poop emoji. However, Gene's constant struggle to express himself properly makes life difficult in Textopolis, where emojis are required to adhere to a single, specific emotion to avoid causing chaos in the city. Gene dreams of becoming a more complex and exciting character, much like the popular "Hi-5" hand gesture emoji or the "Disapprove" face emoji. He confides in his best friend, Alex the code emoji, played by Jason Schwartzman, who tries to help Gene understand the importance of being a traditional emoji. Despite this, Gene's desire for self-discovery and adventure leads him to embark on a perilous journey to find the "Code Guy," a legendary programmer who created Textopolis and can change an emoji's personality. Gene sets out on his quest, leaving his home and the city's safe and stable structure behind. Along the way, he meets another emoji, Jailbreak, played by Anna Faris, a "smiling face with heart eyes" emoji who also feels trapped in the traditional emoji mold. Jailbreak has a rebellious streak and is known for escaping from various emojis she considers to be "boring." As Gene and Jailbreak travel through Textopolis, they find themselves on the run from the city's strict rules and regulations enforced by the enigmatic "Reginald" emoji, played by Patrick Stewart. The stakes become higher as Gene and Jailbreak venture deeper into Textopolis. They discover a hidden underground cave system beneath the city, where a secret community of deviant emojis resides. This motley crew, including a group of radical "trendy" emojis, consists of outcasts and misfits who feel confined by the traditional emoji system. They are initially wary of Gene and Jailbreak, but their charisma and determination win over the group's leader, Jailbreak's "big sister" Poppy the emoji, played by Maya Rudolph. Gene's journey becomes increasingly complicated when he is forced to navigate the challenges of being an outcast in the very city where his kind is expected to be one-dimensional and unremarkable. He must reconcile his desire for self-discovery with the danger that lies ahead, not only from Reginald but also from himself, fearing that he may not be accepted for who he truly is. Meanwhile, back in the safety of Textopolis, Alex and Hi-5, played by Steven Wright, grow increasingly desperate to rescue Gene from his doomed endeavor. As the stakes escalate, Gene realizes that he must find the Code Guy and change himself, or risk losing his own unique identity forever. The climactic moment arrives when Gene and Jailbreak reach the hidden chamber where the Code Guy resides, only to discover the shocking truth about the creator of Textopolis and the reason behind emojis' strict adherence to their designated emotions. Throughout his thrilling quest, Gene experiences a transformative journey of self-discovery, navigating the complexities of identity, community, and belonging. He must learn to accept and love himself for who he is, even if that makes him different from the rest of the emojis in Textopolis. In the end, Gene finds his place within the city, but it is in the most unexpected way possible, bringing the film full circle as he finds that being himself is what truly makes him special.
