The Sandlot

Plot
It's the summer of 1962, and Scotty Smalls is the new kid in town, having just moved in with his mother and stepfather in a suburban neighborhood. Scotty, an awkward and gangly youngster, struggles to fit in with the other kids, particularly when it comes to baseball. The neighborhood is home to a group of nine young baseball enthusiasts who reside in a row of houses, each with their own unique personality and style. The group, affectionately known as "The Sandlot," is led by the fearless and charismatic Benjamin Sanders, whose baseball skills and bold personality have earned him the nickname "The Beast." The gang, consisting of Hamilton "Ham" Porter, Squints Patten, Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, Michael "Mike" Lahey, Yeah-Yeah, and Bertram Grover Weeks among others, spends their days perfecting their pitching, hitting, and fielding skills. One of the neighborhood's most treasured secrets, however, lies beyond the "munchies" - a towering fence that demarcates the edge of the Sandlot from the rest of the properties. Rumors abound about the ferocious beast that resides on the other side of this wall: a massive, intimidating golden retriever named "The Beast." Its reputation is so great that even the bravest of the group members won't dare cross the "munchies." Upon his arrival, Scotty becomes fast friends with The Sandlot gang and begins to learn the ins and outs of baseball, particularly under the keen eye and enthusiastic coaching of Benjamin. Scotty's passion for the sport is evident, and the group takes him under their wing. However, their summer becomes even more electrified as Scotty's lack of experience brings a series of unfortunate events, including a confrontation with the neighborhood bully. The most pivotal challenge Scotty faces, however, is the loss of his prized baseball, signed by his idol, Babe Ruth. As Scotty searches frantically for the ball, The Sandlot gang rallies around him, sharing stories and offering words of encouragement to help their friend in this difficult moment. But their determination to find the lost ball doesn't sit well with the neighborhood bullies. As the summer wears on, The Sandlot gang, determined to retrieve Scotty's prized baseball, makes a decision that changes everything: they are ready to challenge their fears and take on the intimidating dog on the other side of the fence. Scotty, still uncertain whether he's ready to face the beast, decides to take advantage of the group's enthusiasm to ask a question he's been hesitant to ask. This act of faith in his teammates ultimately solidifies their bond by allowing them to prove their loyalty and courage to one another. The stakes are set as The Sandlot gangs prepare for the ultimate confrontation with the beast. Will they successfully overcome their fears and retrieve the ball, or will they face a shocking reality? With the sun beating down and their hearts in their mouths, the young players of The Sandlot embark on an unforgettable adventure that will leave lasting impressions on their lives as well as those they will encounter in the future.

Revisiting this after 20 years, I binged it for 3 days and 3 nights, watching 100 episodes. It was joyful, decadent, and melancholic all at once. The melancholy comes from many places. Despite the elation while watching the animation being the same as in my childhood, the reality outside of the animation exists in a completely distant era. The 10-year-old coming home from school to watch cartoons versus the aimless and boring 30-year-old. And the fact that all these years have truly gone by.

Growing up, Anhui TV used to air this anime during lunchtime and in the evenings on "Colorful Road." The gentle story of the Tatsuya and Kazuya Uesugi brothers, though understated, resonated deeply.

Just thinking about this movie brings tears to my eyes.

Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez loved baseball, more than anyone!
