Thor: The Dark World
Plot
In the realm of Asgard, Thor, the warrior god and son of Odin, has been tasked by his father to protect the universe from the Dark Elves and their leader, Malekith. However, Thor's duty does not begin from this point; rather, it takes him down memory lane, reminiscing about his earlier encounter with Malekith. The Dark Elves, driven by their vengeful leader, had sought to plunge the universe into eternal darkness by using the Aeternity Cube, an ancient and ancient relic capable of absorbing the light of all the galaxies. Their catastrophic attempt had been thwarted by Thor and the mighty Chitauri, with the critical aid from the lovely Jane Foster, an astrophysicist. Although he was repelled by the Dark Elves for the time being, Malekith had sworn to exact revenge on Thor, unleashing a prophecy among the Dark Elves: that Thor would be the reason for their eventual victory. In the present day, An Ancient Darkness teeters to reclaim its former power, spurring the malevolent intentions of the Dark Elves to rise once more. With aid from the Asgardian Sorceress Frigga, Odin unravels an enciphered astronomical map indicating where the eternal Aeternity Door, near the Other Egg – a supposed event of origin of this darkness – is located. These '9 worlds' eventually lose their ability to maintain their energies due to a reduction in power emanating from the enchanting Tree of Life. The absence of power from the Tree of Life inadvertently affects Jane, who, on returning to Earth, loses touch with the fabric of reality and becomes detached from her physical form. Meanwhile, back in Asgard, the cosmic storm is only a sign of further and greater imminent calamities. In preparation for these tough times, Odin seeks advice from the wise Asgardian Seer Heimdall but ultimately succumbs to the treacherous influence of the corrupted broom Malekith - a dark artifact fashioned from bone and offered by him to seek the power it brings. Unaware of his father's manipulated state, Thor sets out on a colossal endeavor to restore the balance of time by discovering the Aeternity Door and subsequently blocking the incoming darkness. Under the guise of his trusty steed, Einherjar (a force that fuels every warrior within Asgard), and riding the golden chariot Mjolnir, an imbalanced Thor faces the consequences of Malekith's malevolent objectives. As the Nine worlds begin to disintegrate and time teeters at the edge of decline, Thor makes an unexpected alliance with a self-admittedly displaced 'bad man'. If we may recall Loki, his younger brother – who has continued to remain uncertain of his place within the grand tapestry of events. Both, alongside two other outcasts of their past from Beyond the realms, Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis, begin their massive preparations to breach the labyrinth of realms surrounding the unlocated Aeternity Door. It is while battling these realms - who also hold grudges towards Thor and all alike - that the power possessed by Thor finds itself put to test. Although, since the realm-hopping appears more menacing than expected, Thor questions his own ability to finally safeguard himself and all the worlds he once swore to protect. As worlds become ever more distorted, Thor is disheartened when reunited with Jane, who finds his efforts quite futile and too little, too late, at the last stages of his perilous gamble towards opening a portal to the Other Realm. Her desperate attempts to return back, however swiftly, are soon shunned, and ultimately puts an acutely desolate seal on their undying love that might never reach its finish. In the turbulent atmosphere and when despair becomes an unbeatable antagonist of both realms, as for the most minute and hopeful sign, a vision of Odin foretells that Asgard still has faith that Thor can still save worlds. Against their wishes to stop, he goes forth to confront, and indeed reclaim his glory for what his allegiance really represents. It is when facing Malekith in a dual challenge at Aeternity's back door that our unsinkable Thor for all he had and indeed ever had (that includes his home, love, loyalty, and family) – still found himself reeling at the consequences of his battle. No marvel, therefore, as within such dire circumstances he finds both relief and a resolution to his eternal struggle to avoid betraying worlds around him that it is ultimately him (Thor) who ends the very darkness with Aeternity absorbed in a catastrophic final climax, all too precariously just when hope teeters very close to his collapsing. That being said, although in this perilous backdrop Thor successfully averts the cosmic catastrophe that has faced humanity for all it held dear, though in gaining a second lease, as in the aftermath of battling such relentless odds - all things prove that for every victory achieved; even the invincible Asgard falls, only its power – as seen – on a scale unparalleled in its former state. Malekith having also undergone great modification during this climactic beat, instead returns triumphant after regaining access to power given by the relic held by Malekith. Having briefly obtained another shot at overcoming his ultimate failure for failing - that reality still reveals inevitable defeat to loom for yet another time.
