Plot

Simon Newton, a skilled London art dealer, is under immense pressure to recover the valuable artwork known as Gainsborough's 'The Duke and Duchess of Rutland'. The priceless painting had been stolen in the midst of a daring heist orchestrated by a group of skilled thieves led by a man named Franck. The team of thieves is desperate to offload the art piece on the black market, and their leader, Franck, is determined to ensure that the valuable item is sold before it is discovered by the authorities. Simon, the art dealer, reaches out to an acquaintance, a skilled hypnotherapist named Elliot Grove. Elliot specializes in the use of hypnosis as a treatment method for a range of psychological afflictions, and he also has an interesting past, having worked for various high-profile individuals and institutions using his unique skillset for various purposes. Simon hopes that Elliot's expertise will enable him to extract crucial information regarding the painting's whereabouts from his own memory. Elliot's methods, however, raise a few red flags among the film's key characters. As the hypnotherapist delves into Simon's subconscious, he discovers a fragmented version of his past, but the truth he digs up does little to satisfy either party's desire for an easy resolution. Elliot's line of questioning also brings up memories of a traumatic event from Simon's childhood that is far more than he bargained for, as this could raise serious problems for the hypnotherapist, both personal and professional. The hypnotherapist soon realizes that working with Simon poses a significant challenge. His memory is hazy, to say the least, due to the severe impact of the traumatic event he experienced earlier in life. This becomes an increasingly important plot thread as the investigation unfolds. Franck and his crew, too, are keeping a close eye on the developments, with each new revelation bringing them closer to the art dealer and hypnotherapist duo and, by extension, the valuable Gainsborough painting. As tensions escalate and time passes, the stakes grow even higher, with several key twists unfolding throughout the investigation. Elliot is eventually forced to delve deeper into Simon's subconscious, a fact that threatens to upend the complex relationships between these key characters. This sets the scene for the film's dramatic climax, which hinges on Elliot's resolve to uncover the truth and find the painting. Throughout 'Trance', the boundaries between reality and fantasy become increasingly blurred, mirroring the main character's troubled mental state. By navigating these shifting moral landscapes and confronting the blurred lines between the conscious and subconscious, the film masterfully crafts a gripping story that will keep viewers guessing right until the very end. The plot is expertly woven to create a gripping narrative that explores various psychological perspectives.
