Triple Frontier

Plot
Set in the midst of the 21st century, Triple Frontier is a gripping action-packed drama directed by J.J. Abrams. The film revolves around five brothers-in-arms, who were once part of the elite U.S. Army Special Forces. Somewhere along the line, life took its toll on them, and they became a shadow of their former selves. Rather than opting for honor and loyalty, the group found themselves battling to maintain a stable lifestyle. Tony Santana (Oscar Isaac) is a consummate leader who dreams of going back to their former life. He's helped along by Luis Morales (Ben Barnes), Tommy Scorch (Jeffrey Donovan), Clay (Martin Sensmeier), and Fred (Charlie Hunnam). Their past military days seemed to be the talk of their current lives, as their camaraderie now rested on shared tales and fantasy recollections about the good old days. While Tony's longed-for life of providing and taking care of his family seems like the ideal goal, the pressures of living paycheck-to-paycheck wore him down. The struggle to make ends meet put substantial weight on Tony's shoulders, eventually affecting his relationship with his family and friends. Therefore, the band of former special operatives started re-uniting for simple get-togethers and rekindling friendships. It wasn't long before they were approached by a man known only as Gabriel Garca Gordillo in the name that could benefit Tony. The wealthy Brazilian-born benefactor sought to assemble his team to pull off an audacious heist that promised millions for their troubles – taking from the South American drug lord known as Tcheka. Tony and his crew were instructed that to infiltrate Tcheca's operation, all they had to do was earn the trust of one of his powerful lieutenants. The group accepted this mission and devised a plan that they believed was inescapable. The operation seemed straightforward – the 'plan' required them to pose as individuals that had caught a drug lord associate (Tcheka's right-hand man) with millions destined to purchase an untidy lot in a crime-ridden island. Tony led his crew of highly tactical former elite forces soldiers as they landed on the remote island. Initially, stealth and unnoticeability were characteristics essential to the theft of the millions from Tcheka's associates. Tony, the crew and the individuals they initially encountered agreed on specific terms for mutual gains – turning a rapprochement into a common goal. Initially receiving a sizeable reward following the mission, Tony even earned an intimate relationship with the sister of another member of the group now at the point of encountering Tcheka directly. Life, however, has its way of dictating new rules. Things take a steep downward turn when the crew makes contact with Tcheka himself. At first appearances, it was all very interesting how Tcheka received them warmly and befriended his powerful crew members so much that at one point, group ties transcended to creating family-like bonds. However, when all seems well, Tcheka sends his men after them. With their position no longer under wraps, they now stood to lose everything they worked for – the money as well as their necks. As time progressed, relationships and loyalty issues between Tony and the rest of the team began taking center stage. Perhaps one thing kept on bothering them and each realized it – Tcheka seems a force to be reckoned with and their actions ignited conflict that seems to expand. Both sides give themselves the upper hand by creating the greatest potential threat for each other, and over the years, situations turned so complex that would have threatened their entire crew with severe consequences – loss of wealth, loyalty, reputation, and most of all their lives. In every dark corner, they found courage to react and devise a plan – both to survive until they escaped from the remote wilderness in a bid to live another day. As Tcheka takes total control to out-screw his most powerful foe and the former special forces soldier fought for survival, along with Tcheka and his crew, the operation transforms into a brutal fight-to-the-death. As characters stood in a dire situation the long-enduring members now clashed in violent power-struggle sessions. When they think they've overcome adversity, new challenges always emerge. Throughout the plot, suspense unravels almost every bit of content – showing you one way or the other never any one side always dominating in the wild – from point-to-point – every act becomes rather more believable and dramatic. Being caught up with so much fight-from-souls within the most unruly situations showed that whatever takes life to balance for every fallen ally almost came down to facing the consequences – for how good your friendship will be isn’t just a set of a rule that you should cling with a tight grip, no matter how hard the situation that confronts you is.

"Did you ever think about the families and children of those guards before you killed them for the money? I'm begging you, please don't suddenly develop a conscience halfway through this."
Juniper
To say the very least, this operation was a complete disaster.

Here's the translation of the review: A middle-aged odyssey of five men. The greatest enemy of a middle-aged man is the damn mediocrity of life, and the urge to break free from it. Like that kid yelling, one of the manifestations of a midlife crisis is wanting to buy a Ferrari. You start craving things beyond your limits, but are you really sure you can fly over the Andes?

I came for the cast, and I wouldn't be upset no matter how it turned out. I came for the cast, and I wouldn't be upset no matter how they performed.
