Until Dawn

Plot

Until Dawn is an interactive horror game, which was later adapted into a standalone film, woven around a gripping mystery that revolves around a group of teenagers in search of the truth behind the disappearance of one of their friends. The game's narrative takes viewers through the perspectives of eight different characters, each of whom will make their way down a treacherous mountain to unravel the truth behind Melanie's vanishing act. The story commences with the events unfolding a year after Melanie's disappearance. Her sister, Beth, or rather her alter ego Clover, along with a group of close friends - Sam and Beth, an aspiring couple; Jessica, a rebellious teenager with a rich history of getting into trouble; Emily, the gang's tech-savvy member; Mike, the brave leader; and Ashely, a seemingly quiet but empathetic teenager - plan to visit the valley where Melanie went missing the year earlier. In their pursuit of answers, the group heads to an abandoned visitor center at the beginning of a stormy evening. As the group explores the deserted area, the tension gradually builds, slowly hinting at the presence of a masked killer in the shadows. The character introductions also offer clues about their previous conflicts, romance, and personal agendas that add depth to the story and heighten the curiosity to find Melanie. Their exploration takes a dark turn when the group realizes it's not an isolated case of supernatural forces behind Melanie's disappearance. Instead, it seems like they have landed themselves in the company of a ruthless killer, who seems all too eager to eliminate their friends, one by one. The series of gruesome murders casts a sense of despair over the characters, with each character's fate hanging in the balance, leaving viewers helplessly suspended, unable to control their demises. However, the true twist unfolds when each of the surviving characters finds themselves waking up, back to the beginning of the same fateful night, without knowing what caused them to relive the experience. This re-playing of the night introduces a crucial factor - player choice. The gamer gets the opportunity to control the decisions of one of the characters to alter the course of the events, playing with time by a series of interactions between the surviving characters, unlocking clues, the killer's identity, or the cause behind the killer's violent actions. The player's choices in every mini-game or Q&A section also have a significant impact on the outcome of the story. The fate of every individual depends on the choices the gamer makes and their understanding of the situations as the night progressively unravels. An ill-fated choice results in a character's gruesome death and starts the night over again but with the knowledge of the preceding events guiding the path of the player's next set of decisions. As the night progresses and events unfold at breakneck speed, nothing seems a mystery anymore except the killer's true identity and motivations. One of the most formidable shocks comes from the revelation that the seemingly weak and frail members hold a crucial role in the unraveling of the mystery surrounding Melanie's disappearance and the reason behind the 'The Stranger's' vengeance. Going down an execution route can lead to some unexpected and agonizing conclusions but can also spare a few survivors who, in the end, were destined to reveal the hidden truth behind Melanie's vanishing, exposing why they faced the wrath of a relentless killer in the depths of a desperate night. In addition to the plot's twists and turns, Until Dawn serves as an effective representation of a classic horror story where fear comes not from the blood-soaked scenes but from the social anxiety and fright of sharing such frightful close quarters. Every breath-holding suspense and each quick switch between intense scenes leaves viewers frightened, disappointed, or frightened all over again at the merciless turn of fate.

Giving it four stars! Maybe it's been too long since I've seen a horror movie in theaters, because I jumped at pretty much every scare. Overall, I think it was pretty good. The setup was a little long, though. It would have been amazing if they had shown all 13 loops!

Feels very video game-y. It borrows heavily from "The Cabin in the Woods," so it's really just a thrill ride.

Okay, here's an English translation of the review, tailored to fit the tone and content of a Until Dawn style horror movie review: "Masked maniacs, oxygen-tank-toting witches, lumbering giants, suicidal fanatics gulping down poison, and hordes of zombified beasts lurking in bear traps, not to mention the town swallowed by the earth... There's a lot going on, but it doesn't quite hit the fever pitch of the director's previous work like *Annabelle 2*. The game adaptation likely puts constraints on things. Also, those found-footage phone segments? Arguably more compelling than the main feature itself. 'Your knowledge really is power : )' adds a sinister touch."

"The thrills are definitely there, with high doses of gore and jump scares. However, the setup and background feel a bit forced and overly convenient, allowing for pretty much any horror element to be thrown in and work. Given that, maybe leaning into horror-comedy territory or getting even more wild could have been more fun. Character development and the ending feel a bit rushed. Overall, it's decent enough in terms of entertainment and immersion."

The film borrows the horror atmosphere and universe from the game, but it tells a completely new story unrelated to the game itself. It revolves around a group of people going to a remote cabin and being hunted by different mysterious and terrifying creatures, only to be killed and then loop back into this terrifying place, repeatedly slaughtered endlessly. However, judging from the film itself, it achieves its goal of scaring the audience. The movie has pretty good scenes that build a sense of terror and horror, and the scares are varied, involving pursuits, supernatural events, and even a bit of humor from unexpected coughs. I don’t know why, but whenever I watch a horror movie, I always think of James Wan's precise and sharp control over horror. He truly is a master…like
