Plot

Ironically, the actual plot unfolds quite differently. First, young Samuel is far from a passive, safe-distance observer. He survives a life-or-death encounter through his own ingenuity. Book is later wounded by the same assailant. And in the climax, Samuel defies Book's order to flee, instead returning to sound the bell, alerting the Amish community and averting disaster.
