Divergent
Plot
In the dystopian society of Chicago, society's structure is strictly divided into five factions, each representing a different virtue: Abnegation, selflessness; Amity, kindness; Candor, honesty; Dauntless, courage; and Erudite, intelligence. The factions are arranged around the idea that each individual can be categorized based on their inherent personality traits, cultivating a society of conformity where the primary goal is the well-being of the collective. Every year, at the age of 16, the citizens of Chicago undergo a rigorous process called the Choosing Ceremony, where they have the option to select the faction that best aligns with their values and personality, thereby shaping their individual identities and contributing to the societal fabric. Beatrice 'Tris' Prior, a 16-year-old Abnegation native with a strong sense of self-sacrifice, finds herself pondering the Choosing Ceremony's implication on her own life. As a result of years of socialized belief in conformity and limited exposure to the outside world, Tris struggles to distinguish between her Abnegation nature and the possible existence of divergent individuals like herself who do not fit neatly into any faction. Before the ceremony, Tris learns that she's Divergent, meaning that her brain behaves differently from the typical profile associated with each faction, signifying an inherent ability for multiple personality traits, which poses a threat to the government. During the ceremony, Tris faces a pivotal moment and must choose among the five factions. While her parent's influence suggests going with the logic of being Abnegation, Tris decides to abandon a lifetime of love, community and security in favor of something more untamed. Thus begins her life as Tris, a Dauntless initiate, putting her at the forefront of the faction's most elite and fearless fighters. Through the initiation process, Tris becomes drawn to her instructor, Tobias 'Four' Eaton, a charmingly tough Dauntless student in pursuit of eradicating her fears. Their complex and sometimes chaotic romance unfolds as they face various challenges in the rigorous initiation process that serves to identify and separate those capable of holding the utmost positions within Dauntless, based on their capacity for fearlessness. Despite their escalating relationship, Tris maintains her resolve to uncover the truth about her Divergent classification, as she repeatedly discovers pieces of conspiracies hinting at an Erudite plot to demolish the divergent population and thereby promote peace through the removal of divergent variables. Under the pretense of her troubled sister's whereabouts and the subsequent discovery of a Divergent-radar devise hidden by the Erudite, Tris starts deciphering the enigmatic motivations behind her faction classification. This knowledge, hidden away from the general public due to its immense and inexplicable power within society, ultimately draws Tris to uncover its hidden truth.
