Veronica

Plot

Set in the vibrant city of Madrid in 1991, Veronica follows the story of Veronica Gutierrez, a young and spirited teenager navigating the complexities of adolescence while taking on the responsibility of caring for her two younger siblings, Pablo and Estrella. Veronica's life is a delicate balance of school, family, and friendships, but it all shifts irrevocably when her family's home becomes a hotbed of supernatural activity. At school, Veronica participates in a séance, which appears to be a harmless and intriguing experiment. However, the session unleashes a malevolent spirit that lingers, sensing an opportunity to wreak havoc on the protagonists. Initially oblivious to the danger, Veronica is about to face a series of inexplicable events that will test her resolve, empathy, and understanding of the unknown. As the ghost begins to make its presence felt in the family home, Veronica is plagued by terrifying visions and malevolent whispers, often catching her unawares. Despite her growing unease, she refuses to confront the fact that something is terribly amiss, diverting her attention from the escalating supernatural occurrences. The strain of caring for her siblings, managing schoolwork, and tending to family duties creates a seemingly insurmountable pressure on Veronica, making it increasingly challenging for her to discern between reality and myth. Her siblings' quirks and anxiety amplify, leaving her feeling guilty and overwhelmed. As Esther starts experiencing unsettling occurrences, Pablo's innocence is juxtaposed with the darkness gathering around them, adding to the mystery. Initially, their parents are reluctant to accept the idea of the supernatural and believe that the events unfolding in their home are the result of their children's active imaginations. With the school hesitant to address the issue directly, Veronica turns to an unlikely source for guidance: a group of misfits she befriends. Veronica seeks out Álex, an outsider from Verónica school that has his own experiences with the supernatural. In a society still unaware of or reluctant to discuss personal and family struggles with mental health issues, children are prone to living differently through imaginative fictions, or through alternative world, all of these coping mechanisms are discussed, however the scenario described before all depicts one living in a veronymous supernatural experience itself. Within this odd group of eccentricities and outsiders, Veronica finds solace and understanding in a space where kids openly congregate and exchange their experiences. As the situation deteriorates and the horror mounts, Veronica begins to feel cornered and unsure about the cause of the malevolent presence, uncertain whether it emanates from an outside force or an existing family member. Unafraid to pose the haunting questions, she wrestles to uncover the source of the menacing force lurking in their lives. The dark spirit gains traction and manifest itself differently as Pablo starts exhibiting increasingly disturbing changes. In one poignant scene, Veronica takes her siblings to the cemetery and reflects on grief, loss, and hope, quietly acknowledging the reality that they might be dealing with a malignant presence that can extinguish love and break lives into unwhole mends. Veronica's discovery unfolds, slowly piecing together details that shed some light on the tragic past events on her new family, in an event it will reshape their relationships on past and present with love, tears, fears and love once more.
